Marseille (a) post match thread

Marseille were I thought pretty poor, but you cannot take a 3-0 win away at there place as anything but a very good result.

Much about the performance was excellent, particularly encouraging to see the back four looking more and more like one that can actually defend and defend well. Its going to take a little more time for Ake and DIas to settle and given how they have both started that is likely to mean they will get even better, Laporte we know all about and a good injury free run now will see him back to his very best sooner rather than later.

The area of concern yet again was up top where for long spells we had loads of the ball and created nothing and chances that need to be taken against better teams went begging. Until the lack of fit goal scoring strikers is addressed I fear we will not prevail in this competition once the knock out rounds begin.

Shame Torres did not get more involved, but once again showed how to finish the kind of chances that usually fall to Sterling and rarely get finished. Sterling however showed what he is good at and that ball he pulled back to Gundogan was superb as was the header from that equally superb cross from Foden.

All in all lots of good signs but I am not sure we have then answer to our finishing issues currently at the club.

If they are just haters of particular players then I hate them... Is this okay with you?

JJ

Nobody hates our players you silly sod. Nor do I think they could do better than Pep, its what football fans do, part of the hobby, nothing more.

People may have their favourites and not rate players who are others favourites thats football and fans.

You dont need my permission to be a bit of a tit, which if you hate other posters because they dont agree with your views on players then you are. So crack on mate.

I liked the increased urgency in the players right to the final whistle. One benefit from having young players like Torres and Foden in the side who are keen to make sure they are in it more often than not. Palmer coming on too, he didn't get long but he chased lost causes and Cancelo was doing the same when he came on. That's the sort of thing I want to see. I think Gundogan and Rodri are both very good players but would like to see them get stuck in more in the defensive side. Both are more than happy to pull out of a tackle and that's the biggest difference in terms of what Fernandinho offered when he was in his prime. He offered all of the passing control and vision we needed but he was also an absolute beast who would be more than happy to get stuck into the opposition and bring them down if needed.

If we're going to get back to being the dominant side domestically we need that steel as well as the energy in the middle. Get Zabba back to the club and let him spend a day with Rodri. That will soon sort him out.

Just for an example, and whilst it was the West Ham game, Gundogan was literally hanging off Rice at one point and Rice still managed to shake him off and break forwards because of how lame the attempt was. Slide in and take the fuckers legs from him.

Think some people's 'hobby' is to shoehorn their hate for a particular player into every conversation they have about football. That's a bit fucking tragic and is probably what JJ is reacting to.

He is 'steady' & not especially good at any one thing but 'ok' in general & a big unit.

It's whether we settle for that, because we think we can get away with it & still win, or whether we try to have players of KDB, Aguero standard in the positions occupied by Rodri & Gundogan.

I think if we did find the 'right' players, we would go up to another level.
There was lots to like last night. The spacing seemed better, we moved the ball quicker and we pressed better, which created the all important first goal.

Rodri though remains a big problem in this team. He can rarely break the lines and just takes too long to do anything with the ball. I can’t believe the player we’re seeing is what we thought we were getting at £60m+. As you say he’s steady at lots of things but he doesn’t excel in anything. Against a parked bus, the ability to move the ball quickly is key. He is about our worst player at doing it and he’s the fulcrum of our offensive play. I hope he suddenly goes up several gears but I don’t see it.

was a far better performance, the energy was better and intent was good. I still have a concern around pace and strenght in the midfield - Marseille still got through the middle easily at times then came up against the defenders. Gundo & Rodri are not blessed with pace and teams can get through them.
