Marseille (a) post match thread

Played well first 30 mins but then became a bit meandering until the second. A few great opportunities missed through carelessness. I remember KDB played Foden in with a beautiful ball at start of second half but Phil overran the ball as did KDB and Sterling on occasions.
Overall, good though and hopefully
more to come.
An issue that’s been there for a while is that when our keep ball breaks down through a misplaced pass or carelessness then teams can cut through us with 1 direct pass. If you watch the game back I remember it happening 2-3 times. Fortunately though Dias, Laporte and an alert Ederson provide a bit more reassurance

The other encouraging and welcome thing was Raheem on the right wing. Look at the 3rd when Foden puts a lovely ball to the back post and Raz is there competing to create the goal. Also, noticeable at least twice when KDB plays the ball inside the full back for Raz to run onto - I remember the full back getting booked.
Those incidents wouldn’t have happened with Mahrez in that RW position.
However, Riyad is a great talent do maybe super sub is the best role for him

could watch the passing game like that all day long, it was at its best all season last night.
All the team playing well and balanced.
If we can play diaz all season, LaPorte keeps fit and rotate with Ake it is surelt end of defensive issues. Diaz is strong, reads the game, times his tackels and blocks. Hell of a player.

Great game. Finally we were energetic and pressed aggressively throughout. Our passing was sharp. And we twice broke down a bunkered in defense and then scored a third when the game opened up.

I'm becoming more and more impressed as I watch Dias play. Great in both boxes, a vocal leader, very good in the air.

I agree, standing against racism seems far more appropriate and less divisive than taking a knee.

True. Arguably, the grandeur nature of the gesture (kneeling) highlights the issue itself. Nonetheless, I don’t feel anyone should be berated if they have their own gesture.

Except he hasn't played well the last few games, he has been passable at best. What actually makes no sense is how quickly people forget the absolute shit-show that was the 1st half at West Ham, never mind the countless other games where Rodri and Gundogan have been paired together and it has been a disaster. Ignoring the past, is actually ignoring the evidence that Gundogan is not a number 8. Its not even like we have to look far to find all the evidence we need. We have two 8s, one is the best midfielder in the world and the absolute gold standard for playing in that position and the other is Gundogan. I am not suggesting that we would be fortunate enough to have two 8s the standard of KDB but its definitely possible to have someone who is that level or two below him and still excellent, not 5 or 6 levels below like Gundogan, who only looks remotely decent in that position against garbage opposition.
Form can change, he has the ability technically and vision, (more than you give him credit for IMO) but his energy and confidence for what reason had been poor for 2 seasons now but also not played advanced enough for me (or he was opting not to). However, he was good against Porto in a awkward game and his free kick also changed that match. I too don’t like the combination with Rodri but let’s see if he can maintain some form, it would be better for all if he can.
