Marseille (a) post match thread

Totally agree, he's perfect when we are already goals up and against tired legs.

He cannot be at the expense of Foden being accommodated as a starter.

Especially so, when Sterling looks so more threatening on the right.

I'd also add that Mahrez is the type of player that we want coming on to break down a low block when we've had no luck after 60/70 mins.

As frustrating as he is, he does often come up with a goal or assist from nowhere on his own doing - a moment of magic when we're struggling to come up with anything.

Basically, the underlying argument with Mahrez is that he should be our super sub and nothing more. If he isn't happy with that, I'm sure we won't be too concerned if he sees his future elsewhere.

We are so much more balanced as a side when he isn't starting and hopefully Pep starts to see this, but I am concerned it will just be rinse and repeat and he'll be starting again this weekend.

Was a comfortable win against a terrible Marseille side.

I thought the central defence looked extremely solid with Dias excellent.

Full backs. - Walker decent enough. Zinchenko rusty as hell.

Rodri and Gundogan ridiculously negative. They keep possession, which has its merits but they never go anywhere with the ball. What makes it more frustrating is that in the 87th minute, Rodri pings a perfect 50 yard ball over the top to Mahrez, if you have that in your locker, fucking use it.

Foden and KDB both good. There’s so much pressure on those two to deliver because of Rodri and Gundogans lack of positivity in their play. We used to have 5 or 6 players playing every week who could create something, now we rely far too much on KDB and Foden.

Sterling and Torres both decent enough without ever reaching top gear.

Overall a professional CL performance but that midfield two will never be top class.
Gundo made two brilliant defence splitting passes and also scored.

Rodri was lively and had a very good game.

It‘s not compulsory to knock them.

I suppose we must accept that Marseille are not a great team but...

I loved the intent and press of that first-half, we were awesome, if we could do that in every game it would be awesome.

Everyone looked completely up for it, when we fire like that we're still a superb team..... brilliant stuff let's keep it going Blues.

Gundo and Rodders did well last night but, as I mentioned earlier, CL games are rarely as hectic and fast as Prem games and that suited them really well. Gundo in particular revelled in it as speed of thought counted for much more than speed of foot. Loved the increase in mobility of the front 3 for most of the game. Mahrez and Berny were brilliant subs as Marseille tired. Laporte and Dias -mmm! Kev and Kyle - tops. Now it's back to the blood and thunder at the weekend.
