Martin Samuel: The plot to shackle City & Chelsea

What is particularly telling is the apparent source of this leak. It would seem that Richard Scudamore has the measure of these hypocrites and the impact that such a move would have on the level of competition in the league.

By the looks of things the voting is very tight on this issue, hence the letter. Has Ashley's and Kenwright's ambition for a big pay day really been sacrificed at the altar of financial certainty? More tellingly, do the aspirations of their fans now count for so little in their calculations?

The hypocrisy of Arsenal on this is especially pronounced. Without our largesse they would have barely made a profit themselves over the last few years and would therefore have struggled to comply with the very same rules that they are proposing. There is no sight of the second page of that Arsenal headed letter, but I don't imagine it mentions ticket pricing and what's best for supporters in any great detail.

This is naked self-interest writ large, nothing else. I'm only surprised that some of the other club owners, who no doubt consider themselves to be streetwise, seem so willing to lap it up. Many of the greatest con men in history have been American. That tradition still appears to be alive and well.
I see the horrible bastard gill is in the thick of it again gdm..

I'd happily give every penny back that City have if the cake were to be split evenly but the fact is these ruled do the opposite and it's unbelievable how some other clubs have been taken in by it.

It's got his fingerprints all over it. There's no way Arsenal would say that united supported the contents of that letter, or its very existence for that matter, without his express consent.

He's happy for others to do his dirty work. He obviously doesn't want to get his hands too dirty. Wouldn't want folk to have reason to question his impartiality.

Stuff like this is exactly why the spanish style idea of electing a chairman needs to be brought in the future of football is being decided by people who are being handed jobs and claim to represent the fans yet have absolutely no connection to them for the most part.

If chairmen were elected then they would have to hold the fans best interests at heart not the best interests of their own pockets which this idea clearly is, its not for the fans its for the money men. I mean how can people like kroenke, the glazers, fenway sports, lerner and yes even the sheikh understand what football means to the people that go every week no matter what, Difference being the sheikh has done something to try and understand what the game means to us where as the others have just thought that these fans are sheep they will come no matter what.

Re: Martin Samuel: The plot to shackle City & Chelsea

What surprises me are the mid table teams who could lose out on potential buyers / investment / opportunities from all of this. This just keeps small capacity clubs small and the well known clubs protected. The outcome here is that investing in a team / club could become out of reach for the rest.

I'm more concerned about leveraging debt on clubs which conveniently is not part of this debate.

Use the money to improve your stadium/ infrastructure/commercial department- if you are maxed out in terms of earning potential maybe you just aren't a club that should be challenging for titles.

So the clubs without 'earning potential' shouldn't bother. Replace the PL table with the Goldman Sachs Earnings Potential Championship.

LOL spot on. They are utterly deluded about football. There's a new breed of "fan" that can only remember the last 10 years and think they're all aspiring accountants

It seems to me that we can't trust the other Premier league clubs to vote against this which as Martin Samuel correctly points out will create the dullest competition this country has ever seen. Unfortunately the huge amounts on offer for the 20 clubs lucky enough to be in the Premier league ensure that club owners are more interested in mid table security rather than actually trying to win something.

So if we can't trust our clubs it's down to the fans of all clubs in all divisions to say NO..and I'm certain there are thousands of Sky subscribing fans around the country who see the real reason for FFP and what it will mean for their dreams. The only thing I can think of is to get fans all around the country to sign up to some Facebook / Twitter campaign promising SKY that should these FFP rules be imposed on the premier league that we will not subscribe to your Sports package.

Get enough people signed up and I'm sure David Gill etc will tell Sky not to worry as people sign up to these things all the time and do nothing. On the other hand with the new huge TV deal Sky will be very keen not to upset their customers (always listen to your customers - isn't that quite an important thing in business?)

Exactly mate, I can read this c*nt like a book, one of the most manipulative slime-balls around, (I feel sorry for Mrs Gill aswell, because this twat will be knocking off any bit of 'skirt' he can behind her back).

The funniest thing about that thread is that Eboue poster ripping Drainy to fucking shreds. He correctly points out that the likes of United and other so-called established clubs have benefitted from outside investment in the past so it would be hypocritical to criticise what City are doing.

Exactly. "I know we used to do it, but we've decided it's not fair anymore" has to be the most piss weak argument for anything ever.
