We can buy Mata and change Milner position to be CM as he used to play for Aston Villa.

He may not excel in his first appearances as a CM , but with time I am sure he will be good enough to play there.

The story does seem to be gathering momentum, so maybe Chelsea are willing to sell to United now. I presumed they would have used him as a bargaining chip to try and get Rooney this summer though.

Won't happen ,if they won't sell them rooney, they won't sell them Mata !
. Spot on the only way they will get Mata is if they get Rooney but would mata risk not getting champs league under moyse?

3 reasons I can think of why Chelsea would sell Mata to United.

1
Rooney. Selling Mata to them would put United in their good books when Shrek leaves in the summer.

2
Mourinho doesn't want to play the sort of football that Mata thrives in so he's surplus to requirements there.

3
While he'll improve United a bit, Mourinho thinks that a team built around him will not overhaul Chelsea.
United will then be unable to buy a complete player for that position having already spunked around £40m on Mata so limiting them to being a "nearly" team for next 2-3 years.
He wants to keep Moyes in a job and for him to do well but not TOO WELL for the next 2-3 years until United consider pulling the plug on
Wee Davey.

For those reasons I'm not too fussed about Mata potentially going there, more concerned about Chelsea TBH as they are currently running rings around those numpties at United and becoming a great threat to our ambitions.

I very much doubt that Mata will be sold to United, if so where will he play? Left wing in Moyes' ridgid 442, get it wide and smash it in. As some have said it's more likely that this deal will see the end of Rooney, and as good as Mata is, he will not be able to score the goals and lead the team like Gr...

My money is however on this being yet more smoke and mirrors. Is it any surprise that yet again, United are at a low, share prices falling, team tumbling in the league. Difficult fixtures ahead, us at the swamp with away games at Arsenal, Liverpool and Everton. The fans are getting pretty disgruntled with the 'chosen one'.

Club thinks, well lets link ourselves with or maybe even faux bid for some of players that will get them giddy again.. Mata, Cavani and now Dante all in two days? That's best part of £100 million easy and close to £600,000 a week to find in wages.

According to many 'close sources' United are very close. Just as they were with Fabregas, Thiago and others in the summer.

I can see a couple of average players signing, too add depth after failing with some exciting targets. Afterall, "try" is the buzz word at United currently.

i don't buy into this putting the rags in a good position to get Rooney in the summer, in 6 months he can pretty much speak with who he wants and agree to go for nothing 12 months later. The only real say the rags will have is if they decide to sell him sooner. For me the real question is would the rags sell Rooney to Chelsea in January and allow Mata to go the other way.

This make sense all around as Chelsea are desperate for Rooney, the rags desperate for a decent midfielder. Rooney thinks Moyes is a knob, Moyes thinks Rooney is a prick and Rooney couldn't give a fuck about the fans. The rags have only a small window to get a decent fee for Rooney and the time is now.

I'd say that's about spot on. They've certainly got form.

Big Milner fan. Has shown this season that he has a wide range of passing and his stamina is unequalled in our squad. He's not a Silva or Nasri in terms of picking a pass when tightly marked but he offers a different type of midfield engine. Highly underrated IMO and like Barrie we often miss him when he doesn't play.
Hope he plays tonight and puts in another MOTM performance.
Good luck Jimmy.

I am also a big Milner fan, and think he is our Zanetti. He is a player you can rely on where ever he play, but I think he can be better CM than Attacking midfielder.
