The game has always been refereed to varying levels of competence.
I do believe, despite the cynical element of my comments, that like the players, modern day referees are fitter, more technically capable and much, much better than their predecessors.
However, I posted my comment not to glorify the 'hard men', rather to point out that, much as I love the modern iteration of the game (especially how we have played under Mancini, Pellegrini and Pep), I think the recent tendency to fall over and roll about after an opponent has wafted by you is contrary to the essence of footy..
Referees have always had a thankless task trying to sort out the nonsense that modern players get up to, at whatever level.. Good luck to anyone taking on the job!
