Matija Nastasic

Got massively over hyped last year and is now suffering as a consequence.

The reality is hes a young lad with a lot to learn, i'm sure he will go on to be a top player for us.

was only really highly rated on bluemoon

match goers have said it from the off, average.

Malanga next to kmpany for next year will be brilliant, Lescott to do his job for the next few months. Nastasic should be 3rd choice, ahead of Steve Segal

He fully deserved the plaudits he was getting after his debut season. He looked like he was well ahead of his years and the signs were there that he could develop into a very good CB. That's from a match going fan who speaks to a lot of other match going fans with a similar opinion.
The fact that he's gone backwards is concerning, there have been mitigating circumstances like injury, unsettled back 4 and different style of play but there's no doubting he's been off the pace whenever he's started this year.

He looked promising, but some of the stuff on here was cringeworthy to be honest.

For a young lad, to be surrounded by quality all day every day, being coached by quality staff, like you say, his regression is worrying

tbh i hope the boy would come on, but tbh has gone backwards. sumit has gone wrong with him, or maybe just a dip in form, but lets hope the real nasty will return like asap

I can't believe how quickly you lot turn on someone with obvious potential. You say he's going backwards, yet the facts are pretty clear to me.

When Mancini signed him, it's pretty obvious Mancini turned to him and just said 'You're my number 1 along with Vinnie, regardless of what happens, you will play if you're fit.' That automatically instills confidence in someone, especially at 19 years old, and it worked. Last season, he played without fear and with confidence, he made mistakes but he never lost his place.

This season, he got injured before the season had even started, comes back and Kompany gets injured and he just hasn't been able to cement his place in the team and that adds pressure. He's now going into games and thinking 'shit, if I fuck this up, I'm out of the team'. It's not Pellegrini's fault, far from it, but can you really hold all this against Nastastic? His manager last season had complete faith in him, this season, his new manager doesn't.

i'd say that's pretty much it. He looks ill at ease and scared to be blamed. This causes mistakes whether through lack of acting or doing things when he shouldn't. Pellegrini's constant centre half rotation is not good for this lad. He's still a good player in my eyes and I hope he refinds his form.

+1

I think people over stated how good he was last year but I also think his "regression" this year has been overstated too. He's not had a decent run of games at any point so it isn't surprising his form has suffered a bit but some people are talking about him like he's Savic.

Rubbish. Without even remarking on the decent percentage of active posters who are also matchgoers:

Don't let reason and sense get in the way of a Bluemoon slating of a player

was he fuck

He has looked a different player this season. It didn't help when Vinny was out and the centre halves were getting chopped and changed, there was no continuity and any partnership is built on knowledge of each other's game and trust. With Nastasic, Demichelis and Lescott all having weaknesses to their defending the confidence appears to have been knocked out of all of them. Nastasic will come back a stronger player in time but he still needs another season behind an established pairing ready to slot in for cup games, injuries and suspensions. Pellegrini seems intent on backing MD so we would appear to have him for at least another 12 months but he should be 4th choice and passing on his experience to the likes of Nastasic and EDS youngsters and not facing the likes of Messi, Robben and co.

Makes me laugh those coming out now saying "I always said he wasn't good" were probably sucking him off last season. He was brilliant last season, perhaps a little overhyped on here but that doesn't take away from his brilliant performances. The stats alone showed he was beating every other defender in the league even Vinnie who had a so so season and won our young player of the season. That sort of ability doesn't just vanish over a summer. He is still that good player but you can tell he has zero confidence in his game right now and Pellegrini really isn't helping that. Throwing him in a game here a game there and then back to the bench after he's been struggling with injury isn't the right way to go about it. He needs a good run of games next to Vinnie to get back to his best and regain his confidence but he'd rather play the long haired liability.

It looks like we will be signing a super expensive defender in the summer anyway so the best thing for him would probably be a loan so he can continue to develop. Those suggesting we get rid because of a few poor performances need to give their heads a wobble. I have no doubts whatsoever this lad will be one of Europe's best defenders in the years to come and you don't just get rid of someone with that much potential.

Excellent post RJ.

His season has been defined by the injury on that horrendous pitch in pre season .
He has never managed to get going which is almost always the case with no proper pre season under his belt.

We saw last year the quality this lad has.
He was 19 years old and his consistency was there for all to see.
Like all young people learning their trade he made mistakes but his debut season , on the whole , was of unbelievable quality.

We have seen with the Balkan players that they need an arm round their shoulder not a firm hand grip on their bollocks . Handle with care and rebuild his confidence is the key.

We will sign a replacement for JL this summer.

Nastasic must impress when called upon for the remainder of this season and work hard to blend in with the clubs desire to play with a high and hard pressing defensive line. Get a good pre season under his belt and fight hard to get in that 1st eleven.

Unless they fail to adapt to Pellegrini's system and what is required of them. We're still a year away from that point I think; he needs an injury-free run to determine whether he can recapture his form while playing the way the manager wants him to.
