A player can only be offside when the ball is played forward, If it's cut back there's no offside.
How did Haaland score without playing the ball forward? ;)

ps. I was replying to a post which suggested offside might be improved if it was black and white (all offside players are committing an offense).

When web was asked about the rags goal against us last year he did say that in the rules it can be onside! So can ours but he said it should be offside!

Heads PiGMOL/rags win tails City lose - seems perfectly fair .

Haaland wasn't offside because you can't be offside when the ball is played/cut back to you even if there's no opposition in front of you.
The post I replied to suggested it might be better if everyone offside was committing an offside offence,

I pointed out that when Haaland scored, Gomez was in an offside position, and so would most players who cut back from the byline before a goal. Hence the reason why we wouldn't want it to be a simple rule.

Yes he was offside but wasn't interfering with play, that's according to the actual rules (whether you like them or not), so it was a good goal. I have no idea why you keep trying to prove otherwise or why you keep bringing up Rashford's goal which was entirely different and very obviously interfering with play.

Naah, it's exactly the same. Rashford impacted an opponent (Ederson)'s ability to play the ball (ie make a save in the keeper's case) just as much as Akanji did, but in the Rashford case we were told decision-making by the goalkeeper shouldn't be taken into account as long as he is able to make a save. On the other hand, for Leno, Webb now tells us he delayed his save because of Akanji's presence so he WAS offside. You can't have it both ways. They are either both on or off for the fourth criteria as far as the keepers are concerned.

Of course, for Rashford, there were about three other considerations which should have led to an actual offence.
