Something I have been meaning to ask. These watchalongs cannot be done legally on a normal paid stream. Like pubs, they would need a business stream. However, unlike a pub licence where the Sky stream is not the business, with watchalongs it is the business. In a pub, the stream is an additional perk for the punter, these grifters are making their money on the back of the stream. Do you or anyone else know the reason they can do it?
I expect it will be licensed by the broadcaster to the watchalong entity, directly or indirectly. It will probably work like the PRS/PPL fee in nightclubs with the fee being linked to numbers attending, or in this case, watching. Sky’s fees are based on the rateable value of the pub but this definitely won’t apply here because most of these businesses are operated from home and this model is much easier to evaluate and monitor the numbers - and will doubtless be expressly provided for in the written contract between the parties.

Sports broadcasters have proven very adept at monetising their products and it’s inconceivable they won’t have been alive to this (absurd) development in the game a long time ago and sought to exploit it.

Given the potential criminal sanctions involved (maximum sentence under section 92 of the Trade Mark Act 1994 is ten years imprisonment) di Cesare would be nuts to not stream through the authorised channels, given how high profile he is, especially as he operates his business through a limited company. I suspect some of the other actors in the field carry on their businesses via a much less formal corporate structure and so will operate much more in the grey zone, but dI Cesare is too high profile and has too much to lose - especially as any conviction would be followed by proceeds of crime proceedings.

Cheers fella, makes sense. There is probably a threshold when the broadcaster steps in says, "read this letter, chummy". Not worth the pursuit under x views. I was hoping the ex cop may spend sometime in a cell, with some old friends, hoping for a reunion.

Thinking about it there will probably be other benefits for Di Cesare with the arrangement in terms of data sharing with the other contracting party, marketing etc…

Given he was Old Bill a few years ago, and is in his mid 40’s those accounts are pretty remarkable (although not necessarily in a good way!). He’s managed to accrue seven figure sums operating under a nom de plume pretending to be a United fan, from what is most likely his converted garage in Solihull.

In the light of that I had to laugh at Sean Custis and Henry Winter waxing lyrical about Kobbie Mainoo on Talkshite this morning. Apparently it was fantastic the way he slowed the game down and distributed the ball. Now Mainoo may, indeed, be "one for the future", like everyone else I haven't seen enough to judge, but last night he came on at 0-0 and slowed an already comatose game down even further and continued to do so even after we went 1-0 down. Every pass he did make, accurately I'll concede, went 5 yards sideways or backwards. I saw nothing that couldn't have been done better by any number of midfield players.
The new Harry Winks / Billy Gilmour. Hope Everton and Sunderland were watching

Mainoo has done nothing beyond what I have seen Rico Lewis do for the last three years (except Rico has won a few medals)

Love the data sharing angle. I wonder which massively successful football club embraced this years ago. Absolutely agree with his targeted his audience well. A huge fan base of Noddy level intelligence and the bonus of being able to snipe about their superior neighbours, which will plug into the Noddy base of the other clubs. Also, he knows the overwhelming majority will have no clue about their own club, nevermind the long and varied histories of other clubs. Top, top grifting.

It’s actually grifting in plain sight, which makes it all the more remarkable.
