And those fans who do go in to bat for the club, do it precisely becasue we don't get a fair and balanced treatment in the media.

Agreed.

Mooney is a prisoner of groupthink....

Groupthink is a phenomenon that occurs when a group of individuals reaches a consensus without critical reasoning or evaluation of the consequences or alternatives.

I don't need to explain what the media groupthink regarding City is, you're only too aware of it. The consensus surrounding the coverage of City is so pervasive, so counter factual, that the "sub-group" of which Mooney is a part (the hand wringers as opposed to the Yankie reds click bait) see no contradiction between their earnest pleas of impartiality and their obvious bias.

Even his castigation of our owner's human rights record is gobsmakingly ridiculous.

The thinking is thus....

Gay rights are human rights, they are absolute, they transcend borders, religions, political systems. If a country does not recognise this human right, as we do in the west, then they are repressive. There are no shades of grey and the Sheikh as a member of the UAE ruling family is culpable in this abhorrence and therefore worthy of detestation.

Except that's not quite how it works, because if the Sheikh and his family were swept from power tomorrow, as rulers have been across the Arab world these last twenty years or so, who replaces him? Cuddly liberals with rainbow laces?

When the people vote in truly open elections in the Arab world they vote for one thing....Islam.

If David thinks the slow, but nevertheless tangible movement towards liberalisation in the UAE, makes our owners detestable, then he'll love it the day fanatics are swept to power in Abu Dhabi on the back of an overwhelming popular mandate.

This is from May last year.

The Anfield Wrap decided to do a "research" piece on the unhappy clubs of Manchester.....

Manchester: A Tale Of Two Owners

They went to the swamp and it was all Glazers Out and the usual nonsense. But I've skipped to the Etihad where David Mooney gave a personal account of his conflicted relationship with City, based on our owner's human rights record and particularly their attitude to gays.

I have no doubt David feels these things deeply, his sincerity is not in question, where we profoundly disagree is when he extrapolates his personal view to paint a picture of a conflicted fan base.

"There are factions within the fan base"

"There are people who will go in to bat for the club no matter what happens"

"There are people who will go in to bat for the owners because of what they've done for the club"

"You can't help that"

David believes that most football fans fall in love with their club as kids, brainwashed by their parents, but as we get older and wiser we can see the bigger picture. Presumably in a more enlightened state of mind there are "City fans who aren't comfortable with the ownership and the ownership model", but can enjoy what takes place on the pitch in the consolation they'll still be cheering on their beloved club if the owners decide to leave.

One of the manifestations of David's angst is that he gives the club his season ticket money and nothing more.

"It's not City fans fault that the Premier League allows owners like Sheikh Mansour in"

"You can be critical of City fans for enjoying that (our success) and accepting that (our owners human rights record) but you shouldn't expect them (City fans) to just drop everything and walk away."

What a twat
