It’s all very well being top of XG but no good if you can’t hit a barn door.

That’s the point. XG is only a good indicator if you have the actual goals to back it up. Otherwise, it means you’re a crap striker i.e. gets into good scoring positions, but shite conversion.

Some players are great at converting opportunities. We tend to over-praise these players because the likes of Sterling missing a chance is more obvious than the fact that 99% of players wouldn't be there to take that chance.

The greatest players do both.
