What an absolute load of bollocks.
Hattenstone portrays himself as a City fan as well.
I am proud of Manchester‘s , heritage leading the way with the Industrial Revolution. If my understanding is correct didn’t we also have history of supporting the abolition of slavery In America.
The line about the golden eagle on the badge had a “whiff of Nazism”.
Fucking disgraceful journalism.

I thought the same.

Is there a mention of Manchester’s proud history of refusing to use slave picked cotton in its mills?

I always thought the ship on our badge represented the Ship Canal, and how it took Liverpool, the slavery and stealing out of the equation

Apparently not according to The Guardian article, why has it taken this amount of time for someone to become offended and highlight that the coats of arms of a city and two football clubs badges have to change?

Can’t wait for his follow up highlighting a certain red devil and all the anti-christ, evil connotations involved in that. Pathetic.

There is a statue of Abraham Lincoln and a square named after him as well just off Albert Square in the centre of Manchester. It was put there to commemorate the support given by the city in the abolition of the slave trade.

I wonder if it will make the news?

Re: The Hattenstone article The Guardian did a few pieces a couple of weeks ago about how Manchester profited from the slave trade during the industrial revolution which was a new one on me as I thought we helped Lincoln abolish it.

They even got Andy Burnham to write a piece on it where he basically said all Mancunians should be educated about Manchesters involvement in the slave trade

The Lincoln statue in Manchester waves..

the inscription on the plinth. It is dedicated to: "the support that the working people of Manchester gave in their fight for the abolition of slavery during the American Civil War.......By supporting the union under President Lincoln at a time when there was an economic blockade of the southern states the Lancashire cotton workers were denied access to raw cotton which caused considerable unemployment throughout the cotton industry."
