Samaras looked great in the Dutch league...

As did Jozy Altidore, 39 goals in 67 appearances. The next season at Sunderland, 1 in 42 appearances.
The last striker we signed made his name in Holland.

I think it's fair to say the league a player is coming from isn't actually a measure of a players ability (even the often mentioned Portugal and Holland.)

He looks a good player with an impressive goal record this season but we've seen so many players post ridiculous numbers in the Dutch league only to come to England and flop - Suarez and van Nistelrooy notwithstanding. We need proven quality this summer. If Depay turns out to be that, then good luck to him but we can't take a chance this time

Not forgetting Arjen Robben, Robin van Persie, Edwin Van Der Sar, Dirk Kuyt, Marc Overmars and Patrick Kluivert.

Patrick Kluivert.... A success in England ? Did I miss something.....?

Dennis Bergkamp may have been a wiser choice.

Arjen Robben came directly to Chelsea from PSV and didn't do too badly.

The likes of Suarez, Bergkamp, Robben ect were all technically sublime footballers, the kind of ability that transcends quality of opposition. Depay looks very much a pacey player who's afforded a lot of space to run into by second rate defending; I'd be shocked if he has any kind of significant impact on this league.

He's practically nailed on to be joining the rags anyway, so I'm not sure why he's even being discussed here.

That's why he will thrive in England, the space given is a lot more than compared to in Spain or Italy for example.

Silva and even Fabregas have made the point of there being more space to operate in over here than in Spain.

In Italy they are saying that one of the reasons Coutinho is flourishing in England is because of the space he is given, his game just didn't suit the tactical Italian game where they squeezed the space out of his game.

Flying into Manchester today talking to the rags or so the rag word has it.

Silva and Fabregas are two of the most intelligent footballers in Europe; that allows them to find the pockets of space. Defenders is this league are generally faster and/or read the game better than in awful Dutch league, so Depay's kick and chase approach will get shut down a lot quicker next season.

Let's not forget Ibra, Seedorf, and Sneijder

Again, they're technically immense footballers; Depay isn't as refined in that sense so it'll be harder for him to have an impact against better opposition.
