Messi trial.

I thought we were keen to sign him...... What does he need a trial for - he looks like he has good potential.

According to this: http://www.sportyghost.com/top-10-highest-selling-club-soccer-jerseys/ Barcelona sold over a million shirts in 2014. And according to this: http://www.sportyghost.com/top-10-best-sold-soccer-jersey-names/ Messi's is the 2nd most selling jersey in the world so you can imagine the kind of money his jersey alone makes for Nike!

Would you say its safe to assume that half of Barcelona's shirts sold would bear Messi's name? If yes then at £60 a pop, Messi's jersey alone makes £30 million a year for Nike. Wouldn't that be the kind of money Adidas may be interested in making for themselves? I think so!
That's very simplistic. You've just taken 500,000 and multiplied it by 60 to come up with £30 million a year. You've not factored in any of the costs associated with selling those shirts (manufacturing, distribution, advertising, sponsorship) and you've not included the retailers' cut or Messi's image rights payments. Just using your own figures, Nike can't possibly make anywhere near £30 million a year from selling Messi shirts alone.

But you're probably right. I may have over simplified it. But my point still stands. We can debate about the number of pounds that Nike earns out of it but we cannot deny or disagree that Nike does earn a good chunk of money because of selling his name on the back of Barcelona's shirts alone.

So if city pay the buy out clause and messi decides he would like to come to city does he have to go and ask adidas if he can leave ?

Not at all! Adidas don't have the veto on Messi's transfer. Do we have the money to pay his release clause AND wages? Yes we do! But with the sword of FFP hanging, will we be able to pay that money and get away with it? I hardly doubt it. All my posts have been about which club realistically has a chance of signing should he be available, not about Adidas being a hindrance to where he goes.

Clearly you haven't watched City chairman's interview on the club's official site where he says City are clear of FFP.

Then again, maybe you're referring to the gamble Ed Woodward would have to take to get him, considering you're only a 4th place team who need to prove you're a top club after only recently qualifying for Europe again.

And why on earth would Messi want to go to Man United?

I have watched it, JMW. Even if we're clear of FFP, does it mean we are capable of spending THAT kind of money without failing it again? Potentially £68 million per year on ONE player! We can either sign Messi alone or we could address the weaknesses in our team. I don't see us doing both AND clearing FFP at the same time.
I dont know what Woodward would or could do. What I know is that based on the information that I've come across, including the latest accounts available, only United seem realistic enough to sign Messi if he were available WITHOUT failing FFP.
But like I've said in almost each and every post in this thread, I'd be glad to be proven wrong if it meant we signed Messi!

If you were Messi and wanted to move to the Premier League, and United would be the only ones triggering your release clause and matching your wage demands without risking failure of FFP, would it matter to you if you really wanted to go to United or not?
