Messi trial.

We could afford Messi, beyond that though i think we are the only real alternative for him besides possibly Bayern.
Utd are a big risk for him if he did take that last big contract, it wouldn't matter who he was sponsored by. No way Messi would use his last big transfer chance to be affected in any way beyond anything besides chances of playing how he likes to play and winning more trophies. Our attacking mentality fed by Txiki would be a big draw to him.

Italy is a backwater in real terms for someone like Messi so that is out of the question. So us, Chelsea (not with kill joy maureen in charge) or Bayern seem his only real choices.
Arsenal in fairness could be an attraction also on second thoughts, i am not sure their board would even consider paying such an amount (needed to secure his services) for any player though.

So many dynamics though should he ever leave, who is our manager at the time, who is Bayerns, will his hunger dissipate after being so successful for so long (doubt it) and so on.
We would be one of his top 2 options though i reckon.

They could very well turn up and say that FFP would not applicable for 5 years henceforth for anyone buying a football club in the future but existing ones however, will have to stick to it.
I agree they won't be able to hamstring us in this transfer window as well as say, 5 years into the future. But what about the season immediately after the season in which we sign Messi? I think they could hamstring us then.

ok, let's say you're Nestle. One day Kraft come along and buy Cadbury. Suddenly rules come into place that Cadbury can spend whatever they like on marketing, new product development, their supply chain etc. whilst Nestle can only spend a small amount because they don't have new owners.

Do you think, for one second, that this would be upheld in a court and allowed to happen?

Do you think, for one second, that the likes of Barca/Real/Bayern are going to sit there and watch new owners at say Atletico/Roma/Sevilla/Valencia spent shitloads of cash whilst they have to abide by FFP, and have their position threatened?

Like I said, Messi would bring in so many revenue streams in a 12 month period that City would not need to be worried about funding the transfer, no matter the strictness of FFP.

Can I also point out, the season after we buy Messi, will have its FFP calculated by the accounts from the season before we sign Messi.

i.e. our accounts for 2014/15 close in May. We start 2015/16 having had our 2013/14 accounts judged for FFP. This summer we buy Messi, Messi goes into the 2015/16 accounts. At the start of 2016/17 we get judged by our 2014/15 accounts, as our 2015/16 accounts close in May.

So it wouldn't be until 2017/18 that we would be scrutinized for any Messi dealing, so that's 2 seasons away, so they couldn't punish us next summer for Messi even if FFP was as strict as it has been (which it won't be), and again we'd have 12 months of whoring the fact we have Messi to the whole world, every brand and every business and we'd more than cover the cost.

Hearing his interviews, I cannot see Messi playing for another club that is not Barcelona or Newells Old Boys de Rosario.

Then again, I may be wrong,

As far as I know, his father is the one who does his taxes. Messi himself might not even have been aware of what his father was doing but then its his money after all so he will be held responsible for it. On a side note, he may well move out of Barcelona to avoid prison. In such a case, United having a deal with Adidas could swing it their way.

I just nearly lost my breakfast rolling around laughing at that last part...........

I've always said to friends, that once I've seen Messi at City (if ever), I would give my season ticket up.

The Champions League will always come second to winning the Premier League, which I have now seen twice and that was unreal enough.

But to see unarguably, the finest player on the planet in a blue shirt, would be the pinnacle for me.
