A whole Metrolink line (Rochdale to East Dids) down this morning due to ice on the overhead lines. Must have dropped to all of -3 last night , but no one at Metrolink thought to send out the necessary number of icebreaker trams overnight.

Seemed to be a lot of posts pointing out negatives, and why things can’t be done, I was just trying to be a bit more creative/positive.
But re your last point, yeah, personally I prefer to walk it as much as possible. But those times when it’s sheeting down it’s not a great option.

It’s frustrating because there seem to be easy solutions but every one hits a barrier in some way. When it comes to trains, the situation in Manchester (and the wider North) is dire as most of us have experienced. It will be interesting to see what happens regarding possible reopened stations either at Park or Miles Platting. Either of these would be good for bringing in visitors on current services from as far as Edinburgh, Newcastle, Leeds, York and Scarborough but it’s still £100M+ maybe to build a new station. I guess most of those visitors will be staying in the city centre anyway so hopping into a taxi isn’t a great deal. It’s a shame the business park at Central Park never materialised in the 2000s as having daily commuters in and out of there could have helped the case of a station out of Manchester on the east side just as there are stations at Salford Central and Crescent on the west side.

Even if they put on direct trams from Altrincham, where I live, they can cancel trams at any time leaving you stranded anywhere from the stadium to stops on the South side of Manchester ! Always use my car at least I know I can get back home ! Have already been stranded twice on the way back from games at Cornbrook when they stopped services without any prior notice !

The whole system us shite ! Even if they put on direct trams from Altrincham, where I live, they can cancel trams at any time leaving you stranded anywhere from the stadium to stops on the South side of Manchester ! Always use my car at least I know I can get back home ! Have already been stranded twice on the way back from games at Cornbrook when they stopped services without any prior notice !

Wednesday 31st v Burnley no direct trams from Altrincham to the Etihad before the game. But guess what direct trams from the Etihad to Altrincham after the game? Bloody barking mad.

Its really not too complicated. If it makes you feel better, change at Cornbrook both ways so you don't get too confused by two very slightly different journeys, one of which is actually better than it was before.

If it’s still 1 tram every 10-15 minutes it’s absolutely pointless. They need a tram every 5 minutes, like pretty much every other major city.

Remember the buses lined up nose to tail on Lloyd Street as games ended at Maine Road.

When people draw up plans for new Arenas/Stadiums/housing estates is there no insistence that the architects and developers include discussions with TfGM and the traffic managers from the council before they present anything to the planning committee?
Or is that too much common sense for them?

My Stepmother used to say that a lot of folks had letters after their names and degrees etc and were brainy but they had no common sense!!

Pretty sure there was a traffic plan segment in which the planning authority made it clear they would not tolerate any additional car parking as part of the application for the Arena. And that was it. There was some discussion about additional levels of public transport but it was all on the "well, we'll ask" rather than anything firm.

If it was remotely fit for purpose they would probably look at it.

Etihad Rail in MENA is a scale operator in freight across the entire region and is progressively entering the passenger market with the ambition of partnering with KSA,Oman and the GCC to provide Cross border services including HyperLoop.

Our metro is a loss making,dysfunctional shambles....Etihad would probably want paying £ MILLIONS £ to take the financial risk associated with buying, operating & investing in it.

HH SHEIKH MANSOUR invests in projects that produce substantial, sustainable returns and growth...Metro doesn't and won't.

I'm not sure how many other tube stations serve The Emirates but Arsenal station on the Piccadilly line has a train every 3 minutes and each holds about the same as two double trams. Our "wonderful" Metrolink is significantly newer and has nowhere near the capacity.
There was a plan to re-open Park station for the Commonwealth Games but it was rejected due to cost. Perhaps we can contribute to a station on the line north of the stadium. I know it's a freight line but could it be used for low speed passenger traffic?
Also, we need buses that don't share Ashton New Road with pedestrians. Send them south down AT Way then into town along Ashton Old Road, And possibly some going north on AT Way and into town along Oldham Road or Rochdale Road.
But this would mean a lot of drivers required for irregular shifts.

I'm sure I've seen that we're limited to the tram capacity by the length of platforms across the network. So the double trams are the largest we're ever going to get. The only solution is more frequent trams. That issue can't happen because of congestion in the city centre.

I do think the 'bee network' concept could help. I would genuinely use public transport if I could buy one cheap ticket that grants me access to any bus/tram/train (like what you get in London). Even better would be the German system that grants anyone with a match-ticket free public transport within that conurbation.

So we have examples of what we can do to improve the situation, but ultimately, Metrolink will never be the London Underground (because Government would never invest the same amount towards it).
