Metrolink to / from Etihad

My personal experience was that it was absolutely fine last night, but was only going back to Deansgate.
The queue constantly moved, there were constant trams queued up, and the one behind the one we boarded (and got seats) was going through to Alty (must have departed at 2215 ish).

The tram driver has just announced a delay. We are at St Peters Square and he had to get off and manually set the points. This is on the eve of 2023 and yet Stephons Rocket springs to mind. A man has to get off the tram to allow it to go forwards.

You’re on my tram. Don’t fall asleep or I’ll slap you, shitbag.

What a disgraceful service. In other threads I have commented on Sydney where they have driverless trains. Us, we can't even get a half decent, modern, efficient service. This country is dying.
I looked past it - must have been riding on the high of getting a direct tram from Alty to the Etihad before the game. Amazing how the simple things aren’t the norm.

Got the tram from Piccadilly Train Station to the Etihad. About 1pm. Tapped in and out. Double tram. Arrived in 8 minutes. Plenty of seats and room on each carriage.

Isn’t the guy behind CrossNorth Programme just a bit of a fantasist? Nicely presented and everything but not official local policy (unless I’ve missed something).

Must say impressed after the game the tram to Ashton arrived about 5 mins after the game and beat all the traffic up Ashton new road.
However i guess a lot of people would of been pissed off as at the park and ride at Ashton Moss a few cars that had parked up over the kerbs had got parking tickets.

I wondered why I'd never heard of it.

Unless he's got £10bn of his own money to do it.

He puts a lot of time into it, using what’s known and his imagination and it’s good to read, but it’s presented as official documentation which just needs pointing out.

Who would set the points on a driverless tram?
Ergh, modern technology does that for you.Instead of sticking a tram on the Altrincham to Manchester train service, same track, same stations, same shit but no upgrade, invest in modern infrastructure. They are currently laying tram tracks all ove Manchester based on 1960s technology.

It doesn't take much imagination to think of a rail tunnel under Manchester.

Tunnels under the city centre for trains or trams are still options and have been discussed in recent years at council and transport authority levels so they’re not impossible. I just think with the financial situation it won’t happen for quite some time.

Driverless trams on public roads?

That would be fun going from St Peter’s Square to Piccadilly and on to the Etihad.

I have been on driverless trams in London (DLR), Lille, Singapore, and other Cities. None of them involved going along public roads.

I wish those who post this type of bullshit would try and understand the key issues before pressing ‘send’!

We could call it the underground, wait a minute.

I am not saying the Met should be driverless. That would never work so why you have to be so aggressive fuck knows. I am talking about investment, forward thinking and even common sense.
In 2023 how can we have a system where a tram driver has to get off the tram and manually change the points ? Not even Casey Jones had to do that.
They are routing all the trams through St Peters Square and are now totally gobsmacked that it is a bottle neck.

Have I missed something, where does this happen? I thought it was all done electronically from a transponder under the tram.

Indeed.

The Metrolink network is very good until you reach the city centre. When it gets to the city centre it becomes painfully slow! You can be sat on the Met with people walking faster on the pavement beside you than the Met is moving.

You clearly have. I few pages back I posted I was on a crowded tram coming back from the match. Just before St Peters Sq the poor driver announced there would be a delay whilst he got off and manually changed the points. In 2022 (as it was) this is farcical and shows the tram is not fit for purpose.
