I'll eat my hat if Luke Shaw isn't a Chelsea player next season should he leave Southampton. Absolutely nailed on if you ask me. Ashley Cole out, Luke Shaw in.

United are in the position of offering him an immediate first choice spot with Evra leaving, unlike Chelsea (Azpilicueta has been a revelation and Mourinho recently bigged him up publicly) and maybe City (hard to tell whether he'd oust whoever of Kolarov/Clichy stays). Add that to the fact United are going spend crazy this summer on fees AND wages, and they have a good chance of signing him.

I still think we're facing a chronic talent shortage. Shaw may become good enough, so may Barkley, but neither of them are close to being first team material for us right now IMO. Huge difference between mid table/shooting for Europe and actually trying to win every competition you're entered in. It's my understanding that Barkley plays mainly as an attacking midfielder - Who would he displace? Silva, Nasri, Yaya when he's there, Jovetic? Is he better than any of those players? Maybe if he could be converted into a central midfielder to eventually replace Yaya, but does he have that intelligence and ability to control a game? You're talking the very very best midfielders needed to make any difference to our squad now. Shaw has an outside shot because we have two shall we say interesting choices at left back, but unless he's pulling up trees already it's a big gamble.

Agree completely about the advantages of signing English players, and I think the core of the squad should be such eventually, but realistically this is still a delicate stage in our development - We can't really take chances.

That's an interesting point of view on both players. For me I see Barkley as a kind of Yaya clone. He's got the ridiculous physical prowess of an all action central midfield player, but with the technique of a number 10. I kind of take your point about where he would play. I think Luke Shaw is a no brainer. Whether or not he's currently better than Clichy/Kolarov is irrelevant as he'll be better than both in a few years.

I know that the pressure is to win every competition we enter, but I think identity is very important and i'm sure that Abu Dhabi and Khaldoon will know as much as we know that the real giant clubs have strong national identities (Barcelona & Madrid full of Spaniards, Munich full of German players, etc). In that sense buying the best English talent should be our priority when the talent becomes available.

They have near enough stopped taking bets on him going to the rags...

1/3 .....Rags
5/2 .....Chavs
16/1.... City

The odds generally reflect the level of media attention given to a particular transfer IMO. Pretty obvious if you look at the players/clubs/odds.

Media does have a bearing on it,and then the weight of money generally shifts the odds
I do get the feeling as love City has said Evra going & Azpilcuetta playing well that the nods been given to the rags
Who knows though........

I think there's a weight of pressure being applied on Luke Shaw to choose Man United, and I think that pressure is coming to bare from right across the media world and beyond. It's no secret that his move to Chelsea is hugely problematic because his agent is also Ashley Cole's agent, and because Mourinho is on a budget these days and doesn't want so much of it spunked on a L/B when Azpilicueta is a good little foot soldier for him. It's also no secret that the rags will be dangling ridiculous amount of money under his nose and selling the istreeeeeeeeeeeee of the mighty man united.

But as someone much wiser than me once said, it ain't final unit it's vinyl. Two years ago at this point we were nailed on certs to sign Van Persie. In the world of transfers especially, things are constantly changing.

I guess I just really want to see us moving for those two lads because I think British talent of the requisite level to play in the City team will be few and far between and so when the talent does appear we should move heaven and earth to sign them.

Would you pay £27m for Shaw though, apparently what United are willing to pay with £85k/week wages (higher than Zaba)? He's very good, but seems overpriced when you could get someone like Ricardo Rodriguez (<a class="postlink" href="http://www.whoscored.com/Players/61610/Show/Ricardo-Rodriguez" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.whoscored.com/Players/61610/ ... -Rodriguez</a>) for around £12m probably.

I take your point but I disagree. There are definitely big commercial advantages to signing English players - it's why the rags for so many years made sure that they trumped everyone in getting these talents.

What I want to see, is City making a statement regarding British players, when they are good enough ie. Shaw/Barkley. Both those players will pay for themselves on the pitch whether they cost 30 or 40 million because they will not be looking for a move to Real Madrid or Barcelona at the end of their first contract cycle.

How much did the rags make out of English players per year? Only Rooney's really marketable, even Ferdinand in his prime isn't on the back of FIFA or a Pepsi can.

Re: Micah Richards

Great guy but dreadful player, injuries must have taken their toll on him as he was awesome at times in the 2011 - 2012 season.

Started vs wigan - lost

started vs watford - losing 2-0 until he came off, won the game 4-2 in the end.

started vs Bayern - losing 2-0 until he came off, won the game 3-2.

Cant be a coincidence.

Hopefully get a decent fee for him in the summer. Seamus Coleman would be my ideal replacement.

Great guy but dreadful player,

Not having that. In our title wining season he was fantastic, one of th best RBs in the league.

Vey sad to see him go, we should be trying to attract the best English talent. Also at a time when English players are proving they are good enough, especially with liverpool who's team is built around English players, same with everton. Even united are trying to buy the best talent. I think we as a club need that core of English players

I said in my post that he was awesome in the the title winning season but his injuries have defiantly caught up with him.
