for me he was found guilty by a ligitimate legal system. a large number of witnesses identified him said he did it.

My sentiments exactly. There appeared to be a shit-load of evidence against him - numerous witnesses identifying him being the main factor. And that's why I think the decision to release him is fucking outrageous. Just shows that if you make enough of a song and dance about something then you can get your own way, regardless of how guilty one is.

sums up our legal and political system.....its stinks.

The scousers have whinged and whined like only they do best and have been relentless in the pursuit of getting him out....innocent or not and Jack Straw has relented....is there an election due soon ????

This stinks....lets turn this around and say a City fan was smashed over the head and suffered brain damage in town by a Bulgarian football fan. The bulgarian is found guilty and sentenced to prison....only to be released by the Bulgarians once he is back in his own country. I know how I would feel........again this stinks of politics and is just wrong.

Obviously innocent he's a Scouser

Exactly. All scousers are always innocent and we should feel dead sorry for them like.

Lets hope that they have got this right or Im sure the next innocent bystander he decides to twat with a paving slab will not be celebrating his release by one of the softest criminal judicial systems going ! (He's actually served just short of 5 years, had he committed the offense over here thats probably close to what he would have got and been out sooner with good behavior)

If he's innocent then good luck to him and he has my sympathy for his loss of liberty but my own opinion is that if he didnt do it he was very heavily involved and it would be sickening if he gets a huge payout for nearly killing an innocent bystander.

The Bulgarian police arrested him, the Bulgarian courts tried him, the Bulgarian jury convicted him and the Bulgarian judge sentenced him. How we have the gall to request he serves his time in the UK, then decide we know better than Bulgaria and free him is beyond me.

agreed Matty. This is a political move by Jack Straw.......I think that anyone else convicted from now on in a Bulgarian court ...innocent or guilty will be seeing out there sentence in Bulgaria.....and rightly so.

Exactly. I thought the whole point of prisoner exchange programmes was that the initial verdict is not reviewed i.e., you do the time you would've done if you'd stayed in the original country. The British Government has no right to make this decision and has almost certainly ensured that the next Brit convicted over there will not be as fortunate.

I used to work for NTL with Michaels sister Laura, she always stated Michael was innocent but i suppose she would!

What ever happened to the guy who admitted throwing the paving slab? he came out after Michael was arrested after ples from his family, think he was called Graham but the bulgarian authorites would not listen to his evidence or summat? They had already made their minds up!!

I know nothing about this case, but it doesn't sit well that we are overturning the Bulgarian court ruling, unilaterally the worry for me is the next time someone ends up being sent down there, what are the chances of them being allowed back to do their time? This should be a matter solely for the Bulgarian courts(unless there is evidence that we have that it's not in the national interest to share with the Bulgarians, which in this case I would HIGHLY doubt).

Some bloke admitted it, then retracted his admission. He made this admission in the safety of the UK knowing full well he was never going to be extradited to Bulgaria and would never have to serve any time for the crime, which puts his confession into doubt in my mind.
