Why admit to doing something like that if you haven't? only a numpty would do that, and according to Laura this guy had no links to the shields family.
According to Shields' mates pretty much every one of them, at some point that night, went into his room and saw him in bed. That's clearly bollocks. Laura Shields isn't exactly the most subjective of people on this matter so I'm not going to hold her opinions and statements in too high a regard, if I could get my brother off a murder charge would I lie/spread false stories? Possibly.
The suggestion is that this Sankey guy lied to get Shields off (whether as a favour to the family or as a misguided sense of loyalty to a fellow Liverpool fan, who knows). He retracted his admission, possibly due to fear of recriminations, or becasue it didn't work. Apparently a "confession" has been made again, and that's what Jack Straw is using to free Shields, maybe it's the same guy, maybe he's now been offered immunity from prosecution, or maybe it's another fabrication to get the guy off.
Lets face it, we don't know, but in order to quash the Bulgarian courts decision Straw doesn't just need to have doubt in the conviction, he needs to be convinced it's wrong and Shields is innocent. This smacks of a political decision rather than a legal one. It also, as has been mentioned above, sets a dangerous precident, not just for future British criminals in Bulgaria, but in other countries too. If we can simply over-rule the decisions once the prisoners are set back to the UK to serve their time then are foreign countries going to be as compliant with future requests? I doubt it.
