A couple of things. Appealing to religious books as a foundation for a modern state is self evidently nonsense. The majority of secular Jews would no doubt concur. Or at least should.
Secondly one of the hotly debated facts is whether in 1948 the Palestinians fled their homes and villages at the point of Israeli guns or whether they left voluntarily having been asked to by surrounding Arab countries who were planning to invade.
Leaving aside the ridiculous nature of whether people would leave their homes voluntarily when an invading force was supposedly coming to their rescue, it doesnt alter the fact that they had the right to return once hostilities had ceased. A right that was never allowed.
