Millner vs. Ireland - alternative thread

Ireland leaving is pretty much inevitable now IMO...Milner will be an excellent acquisition for us. The two are different players and the signing of one shouldn't lead to the other leaving, especially when Viera can still get a squad number. Seems a laughable decision by Mancini, but fuck it, it's done. We'll all get over it...
even though totally different positions, i also don't see how viera can be in the squad before ireland

Lets add Vieira to this...........would you be happy with Vieira in 25 man squad and Ireland out?

Like backing Hughes you mean? Don't get me started down this line.

So you were upset with a percieved lack of support for Hughes, yet you see fit to hurl abuse at our current maneger?

The double standards around here are quite amazing.

not really double standards.......fans on here will see him off, i'm willing to back him, just don't want the guy selling off our youth for nowt.

And you of course are entitled to your opinion, it was the abuse I was objecting to.

I've always liked Stevie as he's come through the ranks at City, but initially I was never that impressed. He started to change my mind when he had that good season under Hughes and I had hopes that he would push on and become even better, but last season looked completely off the pace again.

I'd like to see him stay and be given another chance to prove himself, but at the same time I wouldn't see it as a huge loss if he were to move on. Milner on the other hand has given more consistent performances over the past couple of seasons.

On their day I don't think I could choose between them, but just in terms of consistency I'd have to go with Milner. One thing is for sure though, Villa are by far getting the better deal.

It's good that we are able to purchase such players from our rivals, I just wish we were'nt overly lining their pockets at the same time...

I see Silva (and Assulin assuming he signs) stepping into any of the attacking roles that Stevie would have played, so we seem to be covered as far as that goes.

Bottom line for me, Milner will help us concede less goals than Stevie would. We conceded the most out of the top 6 last season, and if we are to make a push for the title (or whatever your expectations are) we need to plug it up and stop conceding so many.

The thing is, the fact that they play different positions makes it even more of a strange decision. We will have Yaya, DeJong, Barry, and Kompany, who can all play the role Viera plays. But in Ireland's position there's Silva and nominally Tevez. For all the arguments for why Ireland isn't seemingly good enough to be in our squad, I'd argue that if we sell him and don't replace him, there's the potential we could struggle if either Tevez or Silva is injured in the coming season.

My guess is Bobby would have Balotelli, sweep or Assulin (possibly?) play in that position if push came to shove. Shauny played there for a little while yesterday and did a nice job, looked brighter than Ive seen him in a while.

As far as Vieira goes, I think (hope) he is there for his experience and leadership capabilities, dont think he needs to play anything more than a bit part role, not with the players we have that can play that position.

balotelli too can play in that role . silva , tevez , balotelli , they seem enough for me.

I don't think Ireland is leaving because of the 25 man limit, I don't think we'll have too much trouble meeting that without discarding any of our senior players.

So nothing to do with Vieira either, who has a valuable (but different) role to play in the squad.

Personally I'd like us to keep Ireland, and see if he can find the form of two seasons ago. If we can't I'd rather we get maximum value for him and I'm not sure we're getting that if these rumours are to be believed.

As for Milner, I don't think he has a lot to offer but there you go. Wait and see I guess, but he would have to improve by a huge amount to be worth even close to his reported cost.

Ireland isn't good enough - end of.

I've said it for so long and been slated for so long, what he's done to prove to all of you that he's this world-class centre-mid I don't know. He was great in the 08/09 season, but we were a mid-table team. As soon as we signed some world-class players he couldn't hack it.

Milner is a far better player.
