the only "reason" to do it is vengeance, for the people who have no vested interest in a case as you say it is simply bloodlust
- it's shown to result in murdering innocent people
- studies show it does not offer closure to victims families
- it doesn't reduce the homicide rate
- the cost of prosecuting a death penalty case is significantly more expensive than incarcerating someone for life
