MLS / New York City thread

Surprised it's only 25,000 capacity. I know their average is below this but I would have thought there would be an ambition to get that up to the level of the better supported teams in the MLS. 30,000 would be more what I would have expected.

They’ll probably wanted a bigger capacity but might something to do with the infrastructure around the area..

I was thinking this. I suppose when you think about it further, after NFL, ice hockey and basketball are more popular than football over there and they’re in smaller arenas holding 15-20k usually. Even MSG holds just under 21k. So maybe 25k for football will be decent.

I too thought they would go for 30,000. However the average MLS stadium capacity seems around 25k with many less. It does seem a good location for access in a mixed ethnic area where they are more likely to watch "soccer" so should attract crowds.

The development is interesting in that it is not limited to the stadium but includes commercial, housing and amenities not unlike in Manchester. The difference is land is at a premium in New York, restricting plans for the stadium.

Local politics has played a big part. The social housing element seems to have been critical.

Some pretty good attendances in MLS these days but New York City is not a hot bed compared to some places..though that may change.

I watch a fair bit and the supporters look every bit as enthused at the games as I see at the Etihad. Though I don't get to many tail gate parties. The Waldorf is my pre game party.
Is that shit faced in mid town New York or shit faced M/CR city centre ;-)

For such a minority sport they should purchase half the The Red Bulls arena and brand it for NYCFC, like a mini Meadowlands. Plus it’s much closer for me to drive to, Queens is like a total bummer, dude.
