I agree about Distin. Often a rock surrounded by pebbles and gravel.Distin for me. Better than he was appreciated on some dreadful teams. Very solid post-City career.
Also Clichy as several have said. Clichy had some very good years but never in succession. Hard to believe he actually played for Pep as it is starting to seem so long ago that some of those players were here.
I think Clichy, Sagna and Kolarov (at CB) started Pep's first game. Amazing.
I’d also add Martin Petrov — always one of my faves.
Very good player but far too quite and passive personality for a striker in those days.He was very skilful and held the ball up well, but he lacked sufficient physical presence and didn’t score nearly enough goals. Trevor Francis has spoken well of him as a player.
The racial abuse suffered by Alex and the black players of that era was a disgrace.Alex Wiliams deserves a mention. Followed on from a club legend in Joe Corrigan and must have received humungous amounts of abuse from certain sections of fans in those days. Had a pretty decent couple of years for us.
At most away games the amount of bananas thrown on the pitch could have fed a majority of the crowd, it makes me laugh when black players of today suffer bad racism, compared to those dark days it is nothing, although still totally unacceptable.
Williams was a very decent keeper and more importantly a wonderful servant to this club and still is till this day.

I wouldn't say the most underrated player ever but I always liked Ian Brightwell even though plenty of our fans were a bit meh about him.
Shaun Goater in his first 12 months or so with us has to be up there. So much so, that he was even getting booed by a small section of our fanbase just for warming up at Wrexham away on Boxing Day 1998. A few months later when we battered Burnley 6-0 at Turf Moor and the Goat scored 3 of them, a chant went up near us: "Goater's got a hat-trick, Goater's got a hat-trick, You must be shit, You must be shit"!

Another vote for Gaz Baz, there was a year when David Silva won the players player of the year award and in his acceptance speech David basically said he nominated Gareth Barry because he wouldn't be able to do what he does without him. Supremely intelligent footballer.

Reeves was OK, a neat little player, but certainly not worth what we paid for him - a huge fee at the time.
