Moving to Australia

Expensive or not.
Cultured or not....

..... I have to disagree with nimrod's original post , it's the best country on earth to live a safe , healthy, happy life for you and your family .......so , if you're that way inclined give it a go. They always say that you regret things in life that you didn't do , not things that you did.
The only thing missing is watching the blues in the flesh , I know that's a big thing for some people but at least we get to watch EVERY game live.

I hear a lot of Aussies saying this

most of them have never lived anywhere else and its an incredibly insulting thing to say to people who live in other countries

I live in inner city Melbourne. It truly is a wonderful city! And all within easy reach of some stunning countryside/beaches/whatever tickles your fancy

I seem to be in a minority when I say I didn't like Melbourne. It has great facilities, things to do and is clean etc but I just found it to be a bit European and I liked Sydney a lot more largely because of the iconic places. Most people I know loved it and stayed to work there but I just wasn't too keen. I didn't explore much other than to head down the Great Ocean Road for a couple of days.

ha since when has being too european a bad thing? :) personally I found sydney great to visit but melbourne much easier to live in. Unfortunately the opera house and bondi beach doesn't typically feature in your daily commute. Melbourne is also smaller, more tangible and understated- all of which make for a better city in my opinion.

some say we have no culture, others that we are too european- I'm confused

Complaining about Britain being too European is a regular topic on here so why not aus?

I am in Manly which is in the northern beaches area of Sydney. Half way between foetus and wrong blue

Why is thinking something is best insulting? That's a little harsh! I am sure Blueroo is just saying it's the best place on earth for them to live. I've lived in 5 countries travelled to about 50 and worked in many and I wouldn't swap living in Manly for any of them - but that's because it suits me, I know many who would agree with me and have known many who haven't and have moved back to somewhere they prefer.

I think Manchester City are the best team to support in the world but I wouldn't expect an Ausberg or Melbourne victory fan to be offended by that!

I am glad to see a post from someone loving where they live as there are about 50 posts moaning about stuff or how shit places are for every one of those!

a safe place to live, is it after you get rid of all the snakes, spiders and other animals on land what could kill you and then you have to make the sea safe from great white, bull and other sharks, nah I stay here in good old England

I just felt it was like any other City in Europe, that's not a bad thing but travelling all the way to Australia I wasn't going to settle somewhere that I could have flown an hour for... in terms of culture Melbourne has it's fair share. There's no history to it but it depends how much you think culture is dependent on history.

I wanted the typical postcard Australia really... decent beaches, warm weather etc and Melbourne didn't satisfy enough. It probably didn't help that I stayed central whereas my first port of call after landing at Sydney was Coogee.

I chased the sun largely. Arrived for the end of summer in Sydney, moved up to Queensland for winter where it rained about an hour a week. Then back to Sydney for another summer and off to Perth for the next winter (which stayed mild).

It all depends what you want. If you want millions and millions of people, museums, art galleries, theatres, great public transport, cheap living, conversations about Descartes in smoky cafes or sophisticated European culture don't move to Sydney - indeed don't move to australia.

If you want fresh air, space, nature, golden beaches, good wine, good fresh produce and all with clean seas, good weather all year round, bronzed babes in bikinis by the tens of thousands only blighted by upwards inflexions then do.

My brothers in Melbourne and swears by it, NY other brothers in Leeds and wouldn't swap it for Monaco - each to their own
