MP Sir David Amess murdered in Essex

A devoted public servant, a husband and a father to five children has lost his life whilst carrying out his duty in the most utterly tragic way.

It’s not the time for party politics or guessing motivations, it’s a time of mourning for all of us. I feel so sorry for anyone that knew him.

Then stop providing it is the answer. That period from 2016-20 empowered mentalists
Why should a politician not be able to speak his or her mind for fear of being murdered that's not the way things work in a democracy, Jo Cox and now Sir David Amess. It's not Nazi Germany when its a death sentence for saying the right or wrong thing.

It’s not that people can’t speak their mind though, it’s the absence of ‘shades of grey’ that’s the problem. We’ve got a society, that politicians have encouraged, to be either all in or all out. You’re either with me or against me, typified by a PM who surrounds himself with people who won’t disagree with him however misguided he might be on occasion. It’s the weaponisation of difference that’s the biggest danger to democracy and the sooner we realise that the more chance we have of stopping it.
A good first step would be if politicians could agree just to tell the truth…

In or out is a matter for the voters not murderers.

Goes to show how easily our democracy can be attacked, so hard to prevent as it is a basic weapon every household contains.

Seemed like a great man thought fondly of across all the parties.

I think it's online 'debate' that rules out shades of grey and our politicians who are essentially engaged in a ballot box popularity contest get sucked into it. Take any number of the politics threads on here and you'll see what are actually complex issues that cross party lines get quickly boiled down to binary, simplistic left v right pissing contests. Not a pop at BM or BM posters in particular btw, just how things seem to go online - all the nuance / shades of grey are lost.

Police are reporting that Islamic extremism looks likely to have been the motivation for the killing and have declared it a terrorist attack.

Does that take out of being a mental health related issue though? I'm not denying the existence of Islamism, but taken to that extreme then surely terrorism itself is as much mental illness as crime. And no, I'm not for a second excusing it.
