mufc evictions

Let's get one thing straight, it was a hideous tragedy. One that those of us who weren't born during it probably cannot comprehend in the same way to those who lived through it. RIP to ALL those who died in it.

But ... What sticks in my throat is the way the club has shamelessly used it to the own advantage. Forget the evictions, I'm talking about the Munich Benefit Match sponsored by AIG!!! and most of all there beloved hero and all round superstar King Eric Cantona charged more to play in that game than the actual recipients received. Private jet to fly him over the lot!
Now, I don't know about you, but I'd have played in that game for free.
Exactly mate, after all the money some of those players had made out of playing for the rags, they couldn't do it just once for the families of those poor souls?

No, they never gave a fuck, as did the clubs financial and PR department. Some in that club will always remember those who tragically suffered and lost their lives in a respectful, honourable way and credit to them for that. But for those who used it as a chance to swindle every penny they possibly could from the disaster and this benefit match, their morals about it clearly say they did not care too much. If I was the likes of Cantona and whoever else, even though he may have been part reason they sold out, I would have split the money and sent an equal amount to each other the families. The way they just 'happen' to be playing us on the 50th anniversary seems strange to me. Probably an attempt to hit one over us if we disrespected the occasion so they can keep looking all rosy. Impeccable we were.

The fact it took until the 90's to hold a benefit match for their families, at the height of their next successful era, tells you enough about some of the people at that club.

Once again I'd like to pay my respects to those who suffered. RIP.

While the disaster was obviously a big factor in getting them their nationwide 'support' I don't remember the club itself milking it till the late 80's/early 90's when they did seem to start using it quite shamelessly as a promotional and marketing tool, I remember seeing a couple of pieces of merchandise a rag supporting mate of mine had and thinking "hang on that's a bit tasteless to make money out of a disaster."
As big a factor as 5 league titles, 3 FA cup finals (winning once) and becoming the first ever English side to lift the European cup in a 15 year spell?

I agree with your point about the commercialisation of the tragedy being a relatively recent thing tho..

So you'll also agree you support a tw*t of a club considering they DID make Billions of Pounds and Millions of fans over the years on the commercialisation of a tragedy?
Relatively recently? 1998 ish?

You must be so proud of your club.

There was a thread on one of the United forums a few years ago (posted on here at the time, I believe) where posters were saying they went down to Old Trafford for the Munich anniversary memorial gathering and as they were stood in silence a coach full of foreign tourists parked up nearby and all got of making a racket and taking pictures. They weren't best pleased.

I'd say a 10 year spell as for 5 of those years no English clubs competed in it.

Correct, And all this after the organizers had requested for the mega store to close its doors for 15 mins. Only to be told NO CHANCE.
