Has East Bay Ray had a mention yet?
How very dare you. Who's name was first in their little band? I rest my case.
I changed my list for this reason. Got caught up in who was the better player rather than my favourite. Who made those sounds that you loved, regardless of how hard it might be to play. As someone who plays guitar I couldn't help but end up with names that would probably make most top 20 "best" lists anyway mind!
I think Slash's iconic persona/image mean many think he is overrated and it's all quite simple stuff. But, when you listen to his solos they are so well formed and really nail the attitude and meaning of the song.
Hammett as a metal guitarist might feature less, and those who love the genre undoubtedly have other names they would rank above him. You've mentioned the flaws it's claimed he has but I agree that he has a sound and his solo's and licks are diverse and helped bring Metallica more mainstream success. How many metal bands are household names? James Hetfield as a rhythm player is sensational it should be added.
I put Mike Campbell high on my list.
I mention him now because I doubt anybody else will pick him - I mean, if Tom Petty couldn't even get in the Top 100 artists poll, what chance has his lead guitarist got?
But Campbell contributed significantly to the Heartbreakers and Tom Petty solo sound - all that superb rhythm, lead and jangle went a long way to making Petty's songs what they were, And of course he contributed to other artists work, including co-writing and playing on Don Henley's "The Boys of Summer".
That's because Collins wrote it. You don't steal another man's solo...though you might hear in the background a lovely bit of guitar work accompanying the solo...I wonder who that was...:) Don't Misunderstand Me, I'm a fan of both of them, and other Skynyrd guitarists, but Allen played the solo in Freebird while Gary made tweeting noises.
Going to see Francis Dunnery later this month , Lonely Robot in February. It’s really good that voters are embracing favourite guitarist.
In many cases this also means famous.
As many others are promoting guitarists I’ll do my bit.
John Mitchell is a severely underrated player. Known for his work with Frost, It Bites, Kino, Arena, Lonely Robot.
The man he replaced at It Bites -Francis Dunnery is another great guitarist. He was also an innovator of the Tapboard.
Excellent ! Don’t forget your top ten BBGoing to see Francis Dunnery later this month , Lonely Robot in February.
