My House smells at night...

Most forums censor swearing, I got a bollocking on GrandOldTeam for swearing even though the forum software had edited the words out, Apparently swearing messes up their google ranking and the site loses money. Not sure how true that is but it's what the admin fella told me.
I don't think people on here realise how liberal this place is. Kudos to @Ric making it so.
Indeed,i couldn't stop swearing even if i wanted to,i have fond memories of the coven's **** night lol

It must be bloody annoying having a manky smell in your house that can't be identified. We used to have the same problem but it went away around the same time my son moved out. Funnily enough it came back around the time he moved back in.

You're famous on ragcafe, they're all quoting your rant. They've had to put it in a spoiler of course, in case any delicate flower gets upset by the bad language they've blanked out. It's on the bluemoon meltdown thread.
What rant? I'll have to go and have a look now...!

Edit:. Oh, forgot about the Neville one! Fair play to them though, I do have a cellar.

That's okay, they'll just go out for a night on the rob to make up the shortfall.

Hi all,

Had our bungalow converted with an extension at the back and 2 beds/ bathroom upstairs a couple of years ago.

Been in for about a year. long story but builder walked off with our money half way through the job so we had to borrow extra cash and i had to get off my arse and learn a thing or two.

Anyway...

Since the weather has warmed up (march/april), there is this smell that starts in the utility room, in the eve space above and into my sons bedroom ( he has a little doorway that leads into it). It starts off smelling like drains but as the evening goes on it smells like dead animals.

Poor little sod has put up with the stench in his room for some time. He is usually asleep by the time it kicks in.

We had the plumber out and he is stumped. We have checked the loft space and there is no sign of a dead animal.

Seems to be restricted to those three areas and when you "follow your nose" and think you are getting close it disappears. Very odd, very frustrating and very annoying.

Anyone experienced anything similar/ have any advice?

Very difficult to say but my first instinct would be your getting siphonic action in your drains.

In a nutshell the water in the traps, like the water left in your toilet, purpose is that provides a seal between your house and the drains your connecting into.

Often when people install new bathrooms the drain run can be greater than the lengths permitted, the fall on the drains excessive which can result in the water instead of remaining in the trap being carried with the effluent when you flush the toilet, pull the plug on the sink etc. This is siphonic action.

When new drains are installed, in particular, they can often be on the opposite side of the house to where they connect to the underground drainage. Again this can lead to siphonic action unless the drains are ventilated by installing durgo valves/air admittance valves on the drain run.

OP have you checked

1) Drains and manholes outside/next doors as well

2) Uncapped Soil stacks that may be venting around your lads bedroom, they could be inside or out
These are the first things to check

3) Is the house empty during the day,do you come home to find the smell already in the house

4) Does the smell start at the same time every night, how long will it last for

5) Is the smell just localised to the bedroom
