My Swindon Away Story - 1996

Re. Franny Lee jokes from the first paragraph. Lee was in the supermarket and saw an old dear struggling with her shopping bags. He went over to her and said hello luv, can you manage? "No, no" she yelled, "you're not getting me in that job."

A few trips to Swindon…all got a little story with them like most away trips did in those days. Mate drove down for the New Year’s Eve game got lost ended outside parking outside GCHQ not the best idea. One occasion went with the droylesden and failsworth lads coach pat got us in a club in Cheltenham that was fun. The other I ended sat next to nick leeson . One was a mini pitch invasion they did, came over to us lot got quite lively outside if I remember correctly.

Hard to compete with a cracking tale like that, but Swindon was the first place I ran into a Cockney blue as I made my way across the park to the ground

Does anyone remember the Swindon fan who was going mental at us towards the end of the game? I still laugh thinking about it as he was stood at the top of the stairwell raging and a long arm of a steward appeared from nowhere and he was gone.
I remember him, funny as fuck

There used to be T-shirts people wore that said “MCFC: shit team, great fans”. That’s why for those of us of that generation the label that we are basically the opposite winds us all up.

My abiding memory of that game was that Kinkladze was on a completely different wavelength to the other players. A bit like a classical orchestra conductor playing with 10 other blokes who couldn't even hit a triangle. Oh yes, the rain too. And being envious of Swindon having better players than us.
That reminds me of older Blues I've talked to over the years,of Kazimere Deyna.. They all used to say he was on a different wavelength to the rest of the team.Dont think he ever made Swindon away..he didn't miss much.

Last time I went to Swindon would have been late in the 99/2000 season.
Went to Portugal in the autumn and my 2 girls (then 8 and 6) made friends with similar aged sisters and they were from Swindon so got pally with their parents and I said we should meet up when City play there later in the season.
He got us tickets in their end (main stand I think) but at the opposite end to the City fans and a bit of a rowdy section.
My two girls knew to be quiet as their thick Mostonian accents may give us away.... his girls had never been to a game before and were quite excited.... so much so that when City scored (pretty much in line with where we were sat) one of them stood up and shouted "oh look we've scored" as the area went silent and all heads and eyes turned and looked in our direction.......
My friend did his best to convince those around us that he (we) was from Swindon / a Swindon fan and his daughter hadn't a clue as to which team was which.....
When City's 2nd goal went in, heads turned to see what reaction was coming from our group - thankfully there was none this time!
