Naming rights step nearer

Why does the richest club in the world need to get extra cash by naming its ground after some commercial company?

Most clubs don't, and only one big club does. A few smaller clubs do, but they usually need the money.

If a commercial name is chosen for the stadium I'll never use it.

I know what you're saying and if it was Maine Rd, I wouldn't like it, but the name just doesn't feel as precious at this place

This is a bit off topic.. but why did MCFC sign an 250 year lease? A stadium is usually useful for 50 years at most before it needs a major remodel if not torn down and rebuilt in the era of modern stadiums.

Apparently, William Hill has us 100-1 to be playing in the Wonga.com Stadium next season. Also notice their blatant self-promotion (granted, these little blogs are usually pretty light-hearted though). Also, AON, lolwut?

City 6/4 To Be Flying High With Etihad...or Will They Need The Wonga???
Manchester City have been given permission to rename their stadium and William Hill think that current shirt sponsors Etihad are the front runners, offering 6/4 that they win the rights to rename Eastlands. The UAE Tourism Board, UAE Interact, are the 4/1 second favourites with Umbro the 10/1 third favourites.

Given Roberto Mancini’s penchant for scarves and hats, Hills are offering 25/1 that Armani buy the rights and 33/1 Versace do. 100/1 is offered for money-bags City to play in the Wonga Stadium next season!

“Etihad are the clear favourites but should Manchester City ever need a payday loan, maybe renaming Eastlands the Wonga Stadium, could help them out,” said Hill’s spokesman Joe Crilly.

William Hill Who Will Win Rights For Manchester City New Stadium Name:

6/4 Etihad; 4/1 UAE Interact; 10/1 Umbro; 16/1 Vodaphone; 16/1 O2; 16/1 AON; 20/1 Red Bull; 20/1 Benetton; 20/1 Orange; 25/1 Armani; 33/1 Budweiser; 33/1 Versace; 66/1 William Hill; 100/1 Go Compare; 100/1 Wonga

I would imagine that the lease includes the land as well. We couldn't rebuild on the land if we weren't leasing (or owning) it.

Etihad suits it well IMO.

If it becomes something like: Wonga arena lol....it would be lame.

Etihad is the best of those.

Thats a very pipe and slippers comment bud ..

Need to look at getting one of the real powerhouses of branding involved.

of the top 10 most powerful brands most feasible are:

1. Google (bit geeky? kind of like it though)
3. Microsoft
4. Coca Cola
9. BMI

I wouldn't mind putting a cheeky tenner on Jaguar you know. Car brands aren't a bad idea really, and Jaguar signs have been appearing round the stadium recently.

Facebook?
Twitter?

I really like:
Amazon Arena
Apple Arena (discount Iphones!)
