Naomi Osaka refusing to speak to the media - Is she right or wrong?

Christ reading that, anyone would think she’s asked to go through SAS interrogation training every other day.

Should I be surprised that this is incredibly short-sighted...?

As explained, she's Black Japanese and a genuine mix at that. Although there are a tiny tiny amount of this demographic in Japan, she's the first to rise to such prominence.

Being the subject of such media attention since her rise, she's been the subject of claiming and rejection from her nation. It has kind of pushed her towards exploring her Black identity openly where I think she wanted to claim each side equally.

Now, just imagine being a in a world where you're asked all sorts of questions with your race is the baseline underpinning the questions and, so, the answers are drawn with this aspect in mind.

I mean she's supposed to answer for Japanese and her Black heritage instead of her just being a Human Being, for the most part. The questions aren't always simple and direct and she must be fed up of certain 'journos' with an agenda behind the questions.

Wondered why you were all over this thread. Now I know. Cheers.

She's a sportsperson, doing interviews and media shouldn't be part of that. Her job is to be the best athlete possible, not to help journalists.

At the same time, the media is the reason the prize money is as high as it is, but the level if entitlement the journalists have is ridiculous. They are mainly just parasites making a living out of stirring up shit, over dramatising and generally being cunts. If they just did their job and reported on the sport, athletes wouldn't mind talking to them but most of them aren't like that at all. Most barely give a shit about the sport and just want the athletes to write their stories for them by saying something

She has faced questions before on this topic and just brushed it off as her identity is just herself. She also uses a translator when talking to Japanese journalists.

You could say she has three areas of heritage, if you included adopted country of USA.

Afterall despite Naomi (and her sister) using their mother's name because it made things easier to do so in Japan, it was their Haitian father that made coached them in tennis (after being inspired by Richard Williams and his daughters).

Yet from Osaka's perspective, she may find her mental state clearer and stronger because she hasn't had to waste time in the media circus and has shed the emotional baggage that entails.

I don't think the issue is just one of mental health from a clinical mindset. I think avoiding questions from journalists channeling doubtful energy is one of the big issues. Athletes spend alot of time, money and energy trying to get into the zone with help of sports psychologists, they don't want to be distracted by obnoxious sports hacks.

Well, all of this is true with some caveats.

She uses a translator as she isn't fluent in her mother's tongue, but does converse with her in private, that way.

I'm unsure if her parents leaving the homeland was to do with pursuing tennis with better facilities in the US or not really being accepted.

Either way, she's retained her nationality despite living in the States.

She can't really win in whatever she does.

I think its rather sad that someone successful finds dealing with the press difficult and instead of the sport giving her some encouragement they threaten her with being chucked out of a tournament and loads of people who think they are specialists in the field pile on. Then again why am I surprised we have seen that happen time and time again in recent years after we became such a divided nasty country.
