Napoli (A) Post Match Thread

I don’t have a problem with some outlets giving us poor individual ratings. Napoli were fantastic to watch in the first 20mins, so across the whole game you’d expect us to dominate for players to be getting 9s.

The exception there is Stones - I have never seen a more accomplished display from a CB ever! I thought he was absolutely phenomenal tonight.

Even after being 1-0 I said to the wife they’ll never keep it up and we’ll get our chances and boy didn’t we do just that!

The confidence running through that squad must be off the charts to do what they did tonight.

Still buzzing about this win. The more i analyze it the better we were. Some people calling us at fault for the first 20mins. Some of you really do need to lay of the computer games and learn about actual real life football; failing that, remember a game is 90mins long please. Napoli came at us like a tsunami, i am pretty sure Pep's plan was thus... "fuck going at them at first, soak it up and get in at half time maybe a goal down, do that and we will win" in short. Everyone knew they were going to come out hard. It is not fifa footballer or whatever it is called, you can't follow the same rigid tactic week in week out constantly, there will be times to adapt, this was one of those matches.

We followed the game plan exactly as Pep wanted i think, we showed other facets of our game and most important our resilience. To come from behind against a super attacking and well drilled Napoli at their gaff is fantastic and showed we have character in buckets.

Gonna watch it again now actually.
I think that’s one of the most pleasing aspects of the game. They came out to try and blow us away and apart from the goal we handled it well and trusted ourselves to come into the game. I feel our teams under Mancini and Pellegrini would not have coped with that and we’d of lost that game. Shows a real chance in mentality and strength.

that was superb.

i was shocked at Napoli's intensity in the opening 20, but i think they went too hard even for them, couple of hammy twinges here and there. They had to sit back for a little and we really jumped on that quite impressively.

Our countering was A++, defending was generally good and the combative spirit was flowing. They're really good, we're better :)

This all day @willipp, very few can keep their nerves and shape under that pressure. We seemed all in all to know it was coming and i saw no panic anywhere. I agree we would have lost that years gone past. This is a team that went to Roma and won, the same Roma who smashed Chelsea. Ok you can't be so inflexible in how you reason "good" but it sure does speak to it.

I wish we would have had jose in charge last night, 10 at the back from the off, letting the opposition team have the ball as much as possible and standing strong, playing the long ball instead of tippy tappy shit from one end of the pitch to the other, getting that clean sheet whilst offering nothing up front what so ever, making sure the midfield pass it back instead of forwards.
I wonder sometimes if we made a mistake getting pep.

Thoroughly enjoyed it. A real game against opponents that wanted to play the game in the right way; probably the best we’ve faced so far. Stones was excellent but for me Delph was absolutely superb and never put a foot wrong when under pressure. It was great for Agüero’s record breaking goal to be a match winner in a big match rather than an easy one when we’re having a stroll. It’s a shame that most weren’t there to see it live but fucking brilliant for those of us that were. It was one of those “I was there” matches that will always be remembered.

On a slightly negative note, one thing that amazes me is that there’s still people who won’t give Sterling credit. Miserable twat behind me was slagging him off every time he touched the ball and looked thoroughly pissed off when he scored. We don’t need fans like that and he doesn’t deserve a team like ours.

Although I agree mate, I'd certainly not say we were in control in that first 20, we were getting obliterated and couldn't keep the ball whatsoever, but as I said to my lad, we just needed to keep it at 1 goal and they would run out of steam pretty quick, and thank fuck they did!
