When i was a kid i always used to go to night matches in the late 70s /early 80s, whatever the weather i was always perched on one of those white walls on the exit tunnels and i am sure if it was 1980 and we were playing Napoli in the then European Cup i would have had the Mother of all tantrums if i couldn't go so maybe in hundreds of households across Greater Manchester we wil be seeing domestics a plenty.

To be honest i am really excited even about the Birmingham game just sad we have a proportion of season ticket holders who do have the money, don't live far yet can't be arsed to tip up for tomorrow night, the mind boggles but it is there loss.

AC Milan, Widzew Lodz,Twente Enschede, Standard Liege, Juventus, Borussia Munchinmingeback, happy days indeed sat on the kippax white wall.

Also, watching football is not the top priority for the majority of fans.

What a load of old shite.

Most people have families, friends, careers, bills to pay, hobbies, holidays etc.
City are important but not as important as paying bills, spending time with friends and family etc.
If city are you're priority then fair enough mate, but they aren't mine or most other peoples.

I have two children and a mortgage and bills to pay but i also budget to watch city, if you can't manage to get 25 notes together for Citys first match in the european cup for 40 plus years then the mind boggles.

Re: 28k (ish) for Napoli?

I even remember seeing us get battered by Legia Warsaw 5-1 in some friendly being sat in the Platt Lane and having Garry Bailey sat behind me, the person next to me got his autograph i am pleased to say i didn't and i was completely oblivious to him throughout.

These Kids today in the family stand will all their creature comforts, 30 years ago your biggest treat was a burger from one of those carts outside and avoiding the horse shit....great night!!!

I was at the ground yesterday to buy a ticket for my dad - to get us together I had to relocate to the family stand as there were no '2 together' elsewhere. I asked how many tickets were left and the answer was "....it will be a good crowd but not likely to be a sell-out..."

I do not mean to slag of our fans but I must admit I am disappointed and exasperated that we cannot sell out our 1st ever CL game

It is embarrassing - and does ask questions over our claim for many years to have wonderful support - a factor I am guessing was involved in the Sheik's decision to 'choose us'. My take on it is that through the decades of hurt we have suffered we kept our core support - many on here I am sure were going all the years down to Div1 and back - but it will take us some time to attract the larger support that will go to the ground - not helped because of the ease with which you can watch the match live in the pub or at home.

Supporters will be a different breed to when the scum started to attract full houses - the good news (I hope) is that when we knock the scum off their perch they will start to see the gaps appear and accelerate. CITY are doing the right thing (IMO), although unpopular with some fans, by tying in attendance to the big games to attendance at the preliminary rounds. That is for me why the scum do well - and also why when they stop getting to finals it will change.

On a different note - whilst I was there in the (smallish) queue there was an example of the determination of Napoli fans to but tickets in the home end.

There was a couple of young italians going to great lengths to explain how they should get tickets 'booked / requested' via email a week ago using a card that belongs to a CITY fan with points etc etc - they were refused and but the debate went on all the way though the time I was queuing and they were left debating the position with a manager in a side area by the time I left - this probably explains how some of the ticketing policy of CITY in this regards has been right

I personally cant understand why you find attending a football match with say 43k others embarassing. Watching throughout the 80s the crowds dropped to 16, 17K for some matches and not once did I feel embarrassed. We are what we are, we dont have attendances like Arsenal or United but so what? Just enjoy the fact were in the Champs Lge and and youre lucky enough to attend.

Also the attendance we get now, along with the late 70s are the highest in our history. Even when champions in 1968 some of the attendance were poor. Just enjoy the experience, I find it even more amazing that there is a 56 page thread of negativity the week before such an amazing occasion

But I did not say that I find it embarrasing to be at the match with 43k others - what I said I found disappointing/exassperating/embarrassing is that we cannot sell out our ground - different things so you should not twist the words.

You refer to the crowd sizes in the 80s - well I would have been one of those as I also was in the late 60s, 70s and 90s etc. I was proud to be part of those crowds and even so when we did not quite sell out our crowd - or on occasion were no where near - in the circumstances those crowds demonstrated our ongoing steadfast support.

But, FFS, this is historic - our first appearance in the CL - so yes for me it is embarrassing that we cannot sell out and I personally cannot see why you cannot understand what was written

My poit is why do you find it embarrassing that there will be a few empty seats at the stadium, the crowd if posters are correct will be around 43k, its a good attendance and to me proves we have the same strong support we have always had. Like you say you have attended for many years and seen many half full stadiums so its even more surprising you find it embarassing.

You mentioned steadfast support, surely this demonstrates it. Our attendance is comparable with all crowds since moving into the new season. A indicator that we havent been swamped by glory hunters etc.

Should just be put on general sale tomorrow, no points needed.

That definitely wont happen, it would be absure to restrict ticket sales, and then when the Napoli fans arrive put them on general sale.

Schalke in the 1970 Cup Winners Cup semi was actually my first europoean game but i was only 4 and don't remember fuck all about it, fondest memory is deffo the 3-0 win over AC Milan at Maine road, one of the finest atmospheres i can remember at Maine Road, and how sweaty were them burgers or the plumrose hot dogs back in the day!

There is a light said:
A work colleague reckons he rang for four tickets last night and they could only get 4 tickets on two different rows in the North Stand so perhaps it is filling up a bit.
That doesn't mean the third tiers are full though as we all know they are trying to sell out the North/ Family stand first.

It's does make you wonder what the crowd would be if the tickets weren't priced as low as 25 quid. Hopefully enthusiasm for this will grow as the competition progresses. I reckon Villareal will be a lower attendance than this though.

There won't be any selling restrictions for Villarreal in terms of the 70 loyalty points rule that there has been for this game so tickets may well fly out the door quicker than they have for tomorrow's game.

All good points - but - and this is proper question. If you can afford financially to go, and given that all those other conflicting aspects can be managed/compromised, why do you not want to go?

I'm along way off living/breathing City but like several matches through the years, Stoke in 98, Gillingham 99, the semi & final this year - I HAVE to be there tomorrow, I can't even imagine why everyone that can be there doesn't want to be. This is a seriously huge milestone in our clubs history.
