I have never been to Naples but i have travelled a lot and i would be fairly confident it isn't as bad as Moston, Beswick, Ancoats or Longsight so man up you soft shites.

you've obviously never been to Naples. The whole City is 'mafia' run and some of the areas are worse then all the places you named put together.
Obviously not, thats why i say as much in my post.
Everywhere you go is what you make of it. If you go looking for trouble you will get it if you are sensible you will enjoy the place and the experience (wether good or bad).

look for trouble it will find you anywhere get unlucky or stupid and it comes looking for you.

its easy to be stupid in unknown lands at home or abroad

I just looked at the train there, be an amazing adventure, but I wouldn't fancy being over there on my own, i arrive early on matchday, and leave the next day at 3pm, currently mulling it over, i'd love the experience, but i've also heard of the police and fans in napoli. the police round up away fans and leave them in alley for three hours before kick-off apparently, to hide them from the local ultras, then the away end is the most basic facilities possible

Alright Chris, I'm planning on train, really fancy the trip that way. Join me if you like. Be great journey if we can get a carriage load of blues on the sleeper train. I was thinking of getting into paris a bit earlier and have a few beers before heading off to rome. What hotel you thinking of stayin at?

Not got that far in the planning yet, just looking at prices, but if there's one you can recommend I'll have a look,I haven't been to a European game since Schalke, so really hoping to get this going. A carriage-load of blues travelling through France and Italy would
be immense

What's your plans for the train? When are you setting off and what are the prices looking at? I quite fancy a train journey. I was going to go on the sport options trip, but a train trip sounds pretty good.

something like this:

Leave:15:02
Arrive:10:25
18h:23m

15:02 From LONDON ST-PANCRAS To PARIS
then
20:33 From PARIS BERCY To MILAN 05:38
then
milan/naples arive at 10:25am

or we can do leave london @ 14:02, leave bercy in Paris 18:54, arrive Rome, 10am leave Rome to Naples at noon, arrive naples 13:10

price wise showing about £200-£250 plus hotel overnight in naples (about £50-£80).

Thanks for that metalblue I will look into that, sounds good

No worries, I think the Paris-Rome sleeper train is better as it's only a couple of hours into naples from there. Other option is to take sleeper from Paris to Munich then daylight thru alps to Rome, but we'd need to leave a day earlier!

-- Tue Aug 30, 2011 6:23 pm --

Am I right in thinking that Naples is a lot cheaper than Munich?

I mean, not for flights etc but the City in general.

Edging towards Napoli instead of Munich.

Think it's cheap in the less desirable areas Liam, reckon this will be a better away experience in our group thou

Just booked from 19th-24th nice mini break. No doubt I'll meet some of you guys around town...for the match I'll be in with the Napoli fans.

Thanks for all the tips etc Pete...can I trouble you for a bit of advice, trying to book hotel now and thinking of booking the Majestic @ Largo Vasto a Chiaia 68/69 - 80121

ok area etc?

Been told to avoid Forcella, spanish quarter, piaza garibald, secondigliano and scampia - sound advice?

cheers
Yes mb don't know that street personally but you are a few minutes walk from Via Chiaia (pronounced vee-ah key-eye-ah) one of the most upmarket shopping streets in Napoli. Lower end is all designer shops, top end is Piazza del Plebiscito (this is where your tour begins)..!!!!
Dead right about districts to avoid...I would add Rione Sanita to that list. I have myself stayed in 2 fantastic hotels in the Spanish Quarters but not recommended for you guys on a football trip.
Be sure to get your free map from the hotel to get your geography sorted and it will detail all places of interest and public transport aswell.

-- Tue Aug 30, 2011 6:05 pm --

matalblue just a thought. If you are coming from Rome enquire if the Roma_Napoli train stops at Mergellina . This is much closer to your hotel than Napoli Centrale. The advantage of this is that you will avoid Piazza Garribaldi (the place that scares the crap out of everyone!!!)

Don't think you can get to Mergellina without walking from Central station to Garibaldi. Regional train from Rome takes over two hours, but at €10.50 is quarter the price of the high-speed trains, or half the price of inter-city.

Vic I was suggesting a train direct from Rome to Mergellina. I think this one still runs but I may stand corrected. It's just that metalblu's hotel is close to Mergellina station.
