Napoli Away

hi guys,
i'm from napoli, and i support napoli (which is not so obvious because we have many inter and juventus fan even here, god forgive us).
I was enjoying reading your forum 'cos I like how english fans support their teams and I wanted to know what you would think about the champions draw.

But I could not stand some of the things that have been said about napoli (the city).
First of all, a racist city? "they are agains black people"? "they dont like anyone who's not italian"?, come on, seriously? Who gives you this informations, uncyclopedia?
Neapolitans are always been victims of racism here in italy, by the same italians from the north. Plus, napoli is by far the most welcoming city for people that come to italy from africa.
Ask some african guy that has worked in italy if he stayed better in milan or napoli, for example.

Other thing. Shitty hole? Are you serious? yes we may have some troubles with criminality, but still i felt more unsafe hanging around in some areas of london or in gateshead or in glasgow (sorry, I've been just in these 3 british cities). Apart from that napoli is not exactly a shitty hole, is a beautiful city, one of the most important and beautiful cities of europe a couple ofcenturies ago and still magnificent and full of things to see. A shitty hole, please. I like england, I enjoyed working there when I was 20, but in one neighborhood of napoli there are way more beautiful things to see than in all Tyne and Wear.

i know about the stabbings of last year. Those were bad, really. And i felt shame for that. But those are thing that happens in every city (i was doing erasmus in glasgow and i watched a couple of derbys there and well...).

So, dont be afraid to come, enjoy the city and our beatiful (but old) stadium. I think you will not regret it. That day will be a unique atmosphere in naples, we awaited this cup for many here, and i'm sure you wont find a stadium so full of joy very easily.

Try to judge after you have seen things, not before, and not with "cliches".
Sorry about this, and about my poor english, I'm really looking forward to the match between our two BLUE teams.
And win the best!

I'll bet that applies ten times as much to the women! ;-)

Yes there are bad parts and bad people in most cities, I know what you mean. I think for me it's the high level of street crime that's as much a concern as any football-related violence.

I just looked at the train there, be an amazing adventure, but I wouldn't fancy being over there on my own, i arrive early on matchday, and leave the next day at 3pm, currently mulling it over, i'd love the experience, but i've also heard of the police and fans in napoli. the police round up away fans and leave them in alley for three hours before kick-off apparently, to hide them from the local ultras, then the away end is the most basic facilities possible

Alright Chris, I'm planning on train, really fancy the trip that way. Join me if you like. Be great journey if we can get a carriage load of blues on the sleeper train. I was thinking of getting into paris a bit earlier and have a few beers before heading off to rome. What hotel you thinking of stayin at?

Worked out there in 94 and loved the place even ...
... me too, 90 to 94 in the Quartieri Spagnoli, Ahh the memories. Used to go regularly to San Paolo. I even got to hang a city flag from the curva by the end. Just seen top right of this pic. Turned out to be mine and Zola's last game ;) I saw the photo in the newspaper's window display the Monday after the game and persuaded them to sell it to me.
Amazing seeing how many top players took to the field that day for both teams, v Parma. In fact Zola might have already pre-signed for Parma before that game. Lots went on to play in the Prem.
The beginning of the end for Napoli on their long painful descent. A certain Argie's ghost was also still hanging heavy. A familiar journey to us Blues in more ways than one.

Not got that far in the planning yet, just looking at prices, but if there's one you can recommend I'll have a look,I haven't been to a European game since Schalke, so really hoping to get this going. A carriage-load of blues travelling through France and Italy would be immense

I flew in there for my honeymoon 6 or 7 years ago, we then went back there on the train for a day - never had any mither. A lot of the problem may be perception and reputation - for me the biggest problem was the traffic, a very shit place to cross the road. Not the kind of place to arse about but in my opinion not as bad as is being said on here (then again maybe the Mrs frightened the fuck out of em!)

Posts: 384 I have never been to Naples but i have travelled a lot and i would be fairly confident it isn't as bad as Moston, Beswick, Ancoats or Longsight so man up you soft shites.

You obviously haven`t been mate.
Believe it or not, there is a whole world outside of Manchester.
I have been once myself, my family is Italian, and only have bad things to say about it, I wouldn`t recommend it personally, certainly not without an organised trip, even then I`d be in and out and I can speak Italian.
Ancoats, really ?

OK guys I'm English and something of an expert on Napoli. I'm primarily a Pompey fan but 1st went to San Paolo Stadium about 3 years ago and have been about a dozen times.
Let me say to those of you that are put off I completely understand.
However, you will be missing one of the most sensational footballing experiences of your life by not going to San Paolo. Forget Milan Juventus Roma etc for sheer atmospere San Paolo is without equal in Italy.

It is the nearest thing you will get to South American atmosphere in Europe.
Neapolitans are very different to Italians, very outgoing big hearted and very emotional. The city has historically evolved from Greek, Roman, German, French and Spanish influences. Especially Spanish. They have their own language (I don't mean dialect) but any Italian speakers amongst will have no problem.
Napoli fans are hated in Italy from Rome and all points North (excepting Genoa)and are the victims of overt racism in their own country.

You'll never see many fans from Lazio or Milan etc attending San Paolo. You'll never see an adult in Napoli wearing a Juventus shirt in the street. They are fiercley proud of their history and unification with Italy in 1860 saw them relegated into a state of decay.

Now I happened to go to the Liverpool game in Naples flying out from Gatwick. There were about 30 Scousers on my flight. I was there walking the city on those bad days for the handful who were attacked. Wrong place at the wrong time?? Yes probably.
Some advice for you. The police tolerate no nonsense. They love getting batons out but you won't have that worry...they hate the Napoli fans and vice versa. The police will make very sensible arrangements for you. They will give you a pickup point near the port. They will transport you to the stadium under massive escort. They will then return you after the game to the same place.

Some Liverpool fans talked of their terror at walking back to their hotels up the hill towards Piazza Garribaldi. So let me help you..Don't book a hotel near Piazza Garibaldi. It is one of the roughest areas in the city...it's also the station to go to if you wish to visit Pompei or Sorrento. So if you are going for a few days sight seeing don't wear scarves or shirts in this area but just act as a tourist. Wallets should be kept in front pockets preferably in tight jeans. For women watch how the Neapolitan women carry handbags and copy them. Make use of the hotel safe at all times.

Do not wear Rolex watches and no gold on wrists or heavy gold chains around the neck. Basically follow these rules and you won't attract any attention at all. Do not flash cash....and attract attention.

My advise is get a hotel near Piazza Municipio/Piazza Plebiscito. This is well away from Piazza Garibaldi. For those of you not going on organised packages I would recommend you get on the 'Alibus' at Napoli Capodicchino airport. Last time I went it cost 3 euros and makes only 2 stops. Piazza Garribaldi and Piazza Municipio. This bus is specially adapted for tourists with luggage and is much cheaper than the 20-25 euro taxi ride.
Now if you want to see more of Napoli and San Paolo click on my youtube channel my username is pete1201. I'll start you of with this one:

Napoli is a great city if you don't fear it, and you won't taste better pizza or pasta anywhere in Italy...after all this is where the real buffalo mozzarella is produced. If you need more info or tips I will be pleased to help. They say you love Naples or you hate it. There is no in between believe me...but if you are prepared to dig you may end up loving this city as much as me!!!!
