Napoli Vs City Post Match Discussion Thread

Can i just say i think this shows the importance of a good atmosphere, that game looked an intense hostile enviroment to play in and i think we can learn alot from the noise they generate. im not suggesting we set fireworks/flares of in the ground or anything like that but i think more should be done to make it a more hostile enviroment to play as an away team like the whole ground singing rather than just the 2 sections either side of the away fans ..... Just Saying

But we did set some fireworks off in the ground, we had some right dynamite.
And you know what they didnt like it, whistled every time one of our bombs went off.
Obviously cannot do that sort of thing at Eastlands but nice to show them
we can do the same in their own back yard.
Police/stewards didnt give a toss, used to it I suppose.

My thoughts on the Napoli game.

I thought I’d wait until the morning after the night before to express my views on what was effectively our Champions’ League exit. I’ve found that over the past couple of years my knee-jerk reactions have lost me a lot of friends on football forums and in real life, so I took the advice I gave to someone a few months ago, and gave myself a night’s rest and a chance to calm down.

I thought were unlucky last night, looking at the stats and the direction of the play. I can’t remember Napoli causing that much of a threat when they weren’t scoring goals, and both of their goals were slightly down to our own errors – errors that can be corrected with slightly better organisation. We had 60% of the possession away from home in the Champions’ League and we had 18 shots away from home in the Champions’ League; we just couldn’t finish our chances. I don’t think it was Balotelli’s night, and I think we could all see how frustrated he was getting with his missed chances.

We’re not totally out of the Champions’ League, but we’ll need a near miracle to progress. We’ll need to beat one of the best sides in the world (currently) in Bayern Munich, and we’ll need one of the worst teams left in the competition (Villarreal) to beat Napoli. It’s not looking likely, is it? We’re in a difficult position, though; do we just accept that we’re out and rest our players against Bayern so that they’re fresh for the Chelsea game at the weekend, or do we go out all guns blazing with nothing to lose and play a slightly weaker team against one of our biggest title challengers and potentially surrender our unbeaten domestic record for nothing?

I have to stress, though, that if Mancini leaves both Richards and Clichy on the bench together once more, I may have to throttle him. Zabaleta and Kolarov offered very little attacking threat last night, and it’s not the first time this season that they’ve failed to impress when played together. Kolarov did give us a wide option in Naples but when he did cross the ball or look to cut it back, every pass seemed to be a guess (added to that, Kolarov was even getting the basics wrong in the same way Wright-Phillips did during the 09-10 season; balls were slipping under his feet, and his confidence was shot), and none of Zabaleta’s crosses were successful. In all honesty, as much as I love him, he was very poor last night.

Which leads me on to my final point, and the biggest problem about last night’s game... Mancini hasn’t used Zabaleta properly this season. This season he’s played in less than half of our Premier League games (4), but he seems to be first choice right-back for our Champions’ League games. Is that the right thing to do? Mancini seems to be throwing Zabaleta into our biggest games without a shield or any big match practise. I guess it’s just unfortunate.

I can point the finger at specific players and blame them for our poor showing in the Champions’ League this season, but this is just the start. I have to focus on our rivals, Manchester United, to fully get my point across: United were running away with the Premier League in 1994, but they exited the Champions’ League before reaching the group stages of the competition, losing to Galatasary on aggregate. Six seasons later they won the competition.

In other words, it takes time to establish yourself in European football, no matter how good you are domestically. We may have players like Aguero, Nasri, Silva, Dzeko and Kompany but they’ve only been playing together for three months. We’re running away with the league and the team we have is one of the best in the world, but European football is an ugly beast that shows no mercy to a new group of people.

Let’s just batter Liverpool.

Hart 7; Zabaleta 5, Kompany 6, Lescott 6, Kolarov 5; de Jong 5, Yaya 7, Milner 8, Silva 6; Dzeko 6, Balotelli 7.

MCFC BOB,

I'll have to disagree with you a bit. Yes I too agree City looked unlucky to not get a point. But an analysis that focuses on possession alone, will poorly explain what transpired last nite.

Napoli is a counterattacking team, thus they are built to play against bigger more talented teams. They might flounder against lower teams (as the case seems t be in the Serie A) specifically because they are not built to keep possession constantly. And hus when they face inferior teams who themselves intend to sitback, they run into a dilemma. But when they play talented teams that throw players forward in droves, Napoli is actually at its best. Coz they have a host of players who defend staunchly, and an attacking 3 who are cohesive, rapid and well drilled at exploiting space.

As dominant as City were on the ball, they only had 3 point blank chances. The goal, the save on Balotelli, and Balotelli's missed header. Napoli on the other hand had 5. They carved us up on the counter. Yes, those counters were few (6 or 7) but they were deadly, and they should have scored 4 goals if not for the brilliance of Hart, and the luck of the upright.

True we dominated the final 20 minutes of the game (possession wise), but they defended beautifully. Dealt with every cross well, and fought every ball up the middle, and were generally aggressive in their tackles. Perhaps we deserved a draw. And by the way I thought we Played fantastically for most of the game, it just so happens that so did the opposition.

Ratings:
Hart:8.
Zabaletta: 5.5
Kompany: 6
Lescott:6
Kolarov: 5.5
De Jong:5
Yaya: 7
Sliva: 6.5
Milner:6
Balotelli:7
Dxeko:5
Nasri:6.5
Aguero: 6.5
A.J:5

Got to say after seeing it on real tv again that 1st goal was fookin shocking - you´d think after Bayern we´d got to grips with near post defending. Such a poor goal to concede from every conceivable point of view

Yaya Toure was the man responsible for putting our team under pressure & getting Napoli wound up at the start of the 2nd half in direct opposition to the instructions he'd been given five minutes earlier. It caused the nerves which led to mistakes & the 2nd goal. He was the bloke who fell asleep & let Cavani & in for the 1st goal & with just a little effort he could have tracked Cavani & spotted the hole in our defence for the 2nd, like most top midfield players have done over the years, y know 'a bit extra' ?

People are giving him 7 ? Playstation has a lot to answer for. The qualities of heart, brains & bottle not listed in the statistics I take it ?

Some City fans seem to have the "we'll beat everyone" attitude these days. Anyone who saw the Napoli game at the Etihad knew this was going to be a very, very good side City were facing and in their own back yard too, a tough game. On last nights coverage Platt was interviewed at half time and, quite rightly pointed out what City had done wrong in the eyes of the coaching staff in the first half, said they'd addressed it in the dressing room and given advice on how to go out and play the second half. Unfortunately the players didn't follow those instructions or Napoli when not in possession made it difficult to follow them. When City come up against a quality team like last nights opponents there will always be some fans banging on about who should, shouldn't have played, how tactics were wrong etc, etc. On the night, beaten by a better side. I thought they'd done their homework and stuck to a gameplan that had clearly worked for them in Manchester, City got caught in possession and gave the ball away while under pressure and paid the price. We're never going to go out every game and batter teams, I thought Napoli were very good home and away and the arrogant attitude of some City fans I find hard to swallow.

I absolutely agree on everything...

Apparently you aren't familiar that if there's only one defensive mid, cos Yaya, Milner and Silva are all in the final third, the NDJ cant abandon the center mid to cover the fullback. You need two defensive mids, ie Barry and NDJ

So your fullbacks can not attack if you do not play with 2 defensive mids. Right...

Certainly not listed either is "the figment of fantasy filled imaginations"
I.e First hand Knowledge of instructions "not to wind up the Napoli players" that you seem to have baffles me. Are you Bobby by any chance?
That doesn't even compare to the knowledge that said "wind up' above "caused the nerves which led to mistakes & the second goal." I mean really? The first one you could know if you were Bobby the second? You'd really have to be God, No?

And no, generally he shouldn't have tracked Cavanni on the 2nd goal. Yes it might have been nice in this instant, had it stopped Cavanni from scoring. But there was a D.M on Cavanni when he passed of to the wing. Generally speaking, that should be the guy to track Cavanni once he passes off. But here Nigel did not track Cavanni cause Zab was about the to get doubled up, and Silva didn't get back on time. The ball Crosser Dossena, should have been tracked by SIlva, who didn't. because he tried to loose Dossena with his movement when De Jong gave up the ball. He failed to get back, and De Jong shed the striker to help the Full back. The shed Striker should have been picked up by Kompany NOT Yaya. Yaya, Like Milner and like Balotelli should have held at the top of the 18 for a cut back to Inler or Varonica. who wer both in the middle of the field. Had Yaya tracked Cavanni and the cross cut back to Inler, it would be Yaya's fault.

Football is not always about who the man you could see in the screen shot. And Yes, Yaya desrverd a 7. as he created the most telling chance for us, and was best at breaking down Napoli up the middle.

Oh by the way, I don't play or read Playstation. If you know what an Atari is- That was the last time I played video games. I'd let you figure outhow long ago that was.

Good evening to all boys, I'm a fan of Naples and I wanted to discuss with you in a peaceful manner on the game yesterday.
In Naples was a highly anticipated game, this year we have lost many points in the league just for playing in the Champions ... and not having the right parts we struggled.
The game yesterday was beautiful, you should know that our team is exalted against the big teams like you taking advantage of our best weapon, the counter-attack with Lavezzi and Cavani.

Let me give you a good luck for the Premier League, I hope the win.

We put some video of the magical evening, I hope you appreciate the heat from fans and the passion of our fans!
