Bloody hell!

The man was central to a huge upheaval in a country governed by an oppressive, white supremacist minority, in our lifetimes - he was a worldwide figure, loved for what he represented when he left that jail cell, and loved for what he preached - ideals yes, but that's what galvanises people the world over - he was a hero to many for that period of his life.
Yes he was a freedom fighter with all that entails, but there was a 20 year gap between that and his freedom from jail, so he was obviously able to spend the time incarcerated to contemplate the best means to the end of apartheid, and those are the thoughts and sentiments that have brought him almost god like status to many.
I'm not expressing myself very well here, but suffice to say he is a major historical figure to those of my age certainly, and I'll doff my cap to him on his way to wherever heroes and terrorists go in the end.

In the context of an oppressive regime, terrorism/murder is an legitimate force in the pursuit of freedom. When Britain's freedom was threatened in WW2 the RAF thought nothing of bombing Dresden and killing innocent Germans if it brought the war to a quicker end
Anyway looking forward to Bono addressing the nation

What?

That was war. Officially sanctioned war. Not blowing up officially sanctioned women and children in train stations.

Oh so if the British government sanction war, we're fine to drop bombs on 20,000 innocent men, women and children right? But if the ANC attack their oppressors they are evil murdering scum? There is no difference, Britain and Mandela in were both in their own ways fighting a vicious regime.

OPPRESSORS?

They were fucking women and kids waiting for a bus!

Nothing against the fella and hope he RIP.

But cue the Bone/save the children for baby Jesus freaks organising a concert for Cat AIDS in memory of his throwing off his mortal coil.

Bono and Sir Bob (He's not skint now) Geldoff are probably on the phone to the vatican to organise a photo shoot with the strange man in a frock.

They almost look like a deflated water balloon against her chest. Granted they would be great if they were in my mouth but given that is unlikely I'd say they were heckle weps.

Who did you expect to sanction the ANC struggle?
Was Iraq one of your 'officially sanctioned wars'?

In the eyes of the World, yes.

My point is that you can't compare wars to struggles against oppression.
How, under any definition other than Bush and Blair's say so, was the war on Iraq 'officially sanctioned'? You're making it up as you go along.

The ANC's struggle was every bit as justified to the people directly affected as Britain's war against Nazi Germany.

In the eyes of the World, yes.

It is a bit strong, innit? They didn't even do that when dear old Mrs T passed away. The BBC is run by bloody lefties. Shameful.
