I highly doubt that Moyes vetoed either transfer. More than likely they couldn't stump the cash and are making it look like "Fergie tried".

How I felt when Yaya went down only serves to fully reinforce my belief we need to sign a decent centre mid this window.

completely agree .

we need one big time imo.

one injury away from being significantly weaker.

We really need to snap him up because for all the quotes I've read today is that United are still on for him and Benfica are looking to negotiate immediately.

As @Baginz10 points out, Jonathan Wilson says Man United and Matic isn't dead, so it's probably a bit over the top to hunt Moyes on this."

On Matic & Man United, we brought you a claim from Portugal a few days ago saying that Benfica would negotiate soon. "

Benfica will open Matic negotiations with Manchester United within days

With all the pressure of needing a big signing they just might pull the trigger.

Not sure how Matic helps the Rags. He won't be able to step into their side immediately. If they miss the Champions League in the upcoming year they will have some serious issues to contend with.

van Persie
Rooney
De Gea
Vidic
Carrick
Chicharito
and Nani will all be looking for the door.

Think the rags are at a distinct disadvantage now - no guarantee of CL next next season makes us a much more attractive option - More worried about Chelski stepping in and pinching Matic from under our noses - they seem to be able to wrap up deals much quicker than us - either that or they are able to keep everything hush hush much better than we do so it seems like the transfers are done in no time!!

We really need another quality CB ....

Not worried about rags, we can blow them out of the water on wages, fee and chance at trophies. If he goes to rags, it means we didn't want him.

How the roles have reversed eh? Suddenly we're the ones who can justify less wages in lieu of challenging for top honours.

We're fine now that Demichelis is back and Nastasic settled in, should be focused in the summer

No we're not if we're serious about about the CL and Premier League - If Vinnie gets another big injury are you happy to go into big matches against the likes of Bayern and Barca with Demi, Lescott and Nasti ? ...... Would you like to see Messi up against Lescott or Demi ... both are slow and aren't ideal for for the style of football Pellegrini wants to play!!

FAIL TO PREPARE .... PREPARE TO FAIL ....Another quality CB and CM and I think we can blow our premier league rivals out of the water and go close in the CL too. I know some people think we need fullbacks but If Micah can get fit and find some form I think we are OK at right back and with Kolarov getting a new lease of life under Pellegrini and Clichy I think we have sufficient cover at left back too ....

Anyone have any better idea if we're even seriously pursuing this lad? We must be aware we're an injury to Yaya or Fern away from looking decidedly Un-Pellegrini like? We can even suffer an injury to Kompany better than either of those two at the minute.

Being on record as preparing to shop from sides eliminated from the CL, we probably know Benfica's predicament and won't be fleeced. If we want him, we'll get him, but it may be that MP would prefer to keep the squad intact rather than bring someone in now, hence our playing Garcia and then Demichelis in midfield. That might allow Fernandinho and Toure to keep something in the tank.

He will go to the highest bidder as Benfica are putting their prized talents on the market to cover the losses of CL. No cut rate deals here.

Will go back to Chelsea imo. If I remember right he didn't want to leave them in the first place with Luiz deal. Normally I wouldn't think a return would be likely, Mourinho factor will swing it.

Matic associated with Manchester City

After Pellegrini admitted the arrival of "a great player", increasing rumors that Benfica midfielder may be the target.
The manager of Manchester City, Manuel Pellegrini, admitted yesterday to hire a strengthening weight reopening of this market and the English press did not hesitate to establish a direct link to ... Matic target of citizens.

"If we hire a player, because it is very good. We have a high level in the squad and if we want to improve, we have to try to buy a major player," said the Chilean coach, ensuring that "for now this is not a major concern" the wealthy British emblem.

At Manchester City, remember, has been widely hyped the possible departure of former Benfica's Javi Garcia ...
