Load of rubbish this thread, im 25 so never saw the hooliganism of the 70s and 80s but im sure that was 10x worse then a few lads throwing a couple of pints about.

You are right, it was 10 times worse.

Google 'Hillsborough' and 'Heysel' to see where that got us.

Mistakes were made and lessons learned; society has changed, it is now less tolerant of any kind of violence. A good thing obviously. So the chances for this generation to behave as badly as my generation did, are more limited. Again, not a bad thing.

I was at both WBA in Nov 87, and Gelsenkirchen on Wednesday night.

I can still remember walking back to the car at West Brom whilst observing the Guvnors in full flow, just 50 yards in front of us.
The big difference is that I never felt threatened by the hooligans who supported my team.
I don't feel like that anymore, especially if I say something like "Gundogan's been playing better than Silva recently" to the wrong person, (who instead of arguing constructively, will probably call me a wanker).

You beat me to it , I can’t remember a time back then when I felt threatened by our own fans not like I do now. And yes I did go home and away back then as I do now.

When did this exciting trend of beer throwing start? I don't remember it when I was young and if I remember well you could take it on the terraces and to your seat then. Money was tight so we probably drank it, mind you it was crap Greenhall's so should have been thrown lol!

Let's face it that with our drinking culture, when you get a shed load of blokes on a foreign trip supping all day and night you're gonna get some acting like kn*bs no matter what age they are or whether its watching football or not. Not condoning it, just don't think our fans are gonna be different than most other British fans abroad. I saw plenty of cocky looking young celtic fans at Manchester Airport on Tuesday who were flying out to Valencia who you wouldn't want to share a bar with later on that night.

I'm now a boring 49 year old who is probably gonna take a month to recover from the Schalke trip but I often think these days that I'm glad that City never got into Europe when I was in my teens/early 20's cos I know I would've probably have been a nightmare. Think people need to remember what its like to
be young and cut them some slack (but obviously not put up with stuff that really does cross the line).

On arriving in Dusseldorf on Tuesday night I actually commented on how good it was to see so many young fans out as they had the old town absolutely bouncing. Did see some drugs knocking about (unfortunately that's prevalent amongst far too many youngsters these days) but all seemed just out for a good time and I didn't feel any malice in the air at all and was just great to be apart of it all.

On a slightly different note I'm more concerned that as a fan base (especially one made up entirely of blokes on the p*ss) that yet again we spent 85 minutes sat in total silence and not contributing whatsoever to the great atmosphere the Schalke fans created. Why?? If we made as much noise in the games as we do in bars, trains, concourses etc we'd be up there with the best in the world like the old days. Lets get it sorted for the home leg blues and roar the lads to victory. This cups there for the taking if we want it enough.

It wasn’t the throwing the pints about that’s the issue really although I expect we won’t get the opportunity again.

. It’s the wired contingent of our fans who are in a confined space off their nut. Guess what they can’t keep still and get angry. Not with away fans but with their mates or whichever poor fucker happens to be stood near him.

At anfield how I never smacked the twat behind me who was off his nut and thought it funny to keep nicking people’s hats including mine and push me and say if we score that hat of yours is going on the pitch. He just wanted a rise from me or anyone.

Back in the day people were fighting with other fans not with their own fans. As I say at Schalke we were leaving and dipped under the rail and left with the Schalke fans as we felt safer than leaving with the German fans than leaving with the city fans around us who were all rowing amongst each other. Even though we had scored a last minute winner.

We are dealing with probabilities here. The fact that 2 teenagers with you behaved well is irrelevant. It's anecdotal evidence. Is it ageist bullshit that when the 2 teenagers you refer to try to get car insurance they will pay more than a 40 year old? Of course not. They will pay more because they are young men and their age group and testicles will count against them. Not because the insurance company are ageist and sexist but because statistically they are more likely to be involved in an accident than older drivers and girls of their own age group. For they same reasons they are more likely to get into trouble on a football away day.

All I know is that having attended City games at well over 100 grounds in my lifetime, I've seen shitty behaviour from ALL age groups and continue to do so, but plenty of the really sinister shit that has gone on down the years has been committed by fans who are old enough to know better and not from the younger lot. This idea that it's only ever kids who cause shit at football matches is complete and utter bollocks and sticking up a shitty graph from 9 years ago does nothing to prove otherwise.

I remember being hit with a load of drink against Sunderland at Wembley when we scored, which was probably coke or something. Not pleasant especially as I was going straight to the pub afterwards and had no time to go and change. I got the usual, "Cheer up! " and worse when I expressed I wasn't happy, all from plebs I could have comfortably sparked if I had wanted. Childish in my eyes and a waste of money throwing drink about like five year olds at a kids party.

Yep, people defending the behaviour as boisterous behaviour would be the first to kick off if this happened in their local on a Friday night. Not sure they’d be quiet as tolerant if out with his wife and 30 city fans come in dancing on tables, chanting songs, call his wife a minger and chucking lager around.

Been going regularly to away games for 13 years, and at 31 I wouldn't say I'm in the "young" category - I don't think that there's a new breed of fan whatsoever, I didn't see any aggression on Wednesday night.

The only time where I've felt over the years "fuck me our fans are dicks" was the two times we've played Barcelona in the last 16 - no coincidence that you've got over 2 months to plan the away trip and it's a piece of piss to get to.

And it's a knock out game - big games and City fans scrapping with each other goes hand in hand. In fact if I don't hear or see blue on blue this coming Sunday then I will truly know that we're taking our success for granted!

And by the way, all fans are the same throughout the country - I'm sure you'll have Accrington Stanley fans thinking the under 25 year olds are a bunch of troublesome cokeheads too. We're no different to any other set of supporters apart from dressing better than United fans.
