New breed of away fan

All I know is that having attended City games at well over 100 grounds in my lifetime, I've seen shitty behaviour from ALL age groups and continue to do so, but plenty of the really sinister shit that has gone on down the years has been committed by fans who are old enough to know better and not from the younger lot. This idea that it's only ever kids who cause shit at football matches is complete and utter bollocks and sticking up a shitty graph from 9 years ago does nothing to prove otherwise.

I don't think anyone on this thread has said that. Again, we are dealing with simple statistics here...

I actually posted something similar to this years ago to Eccles Blue (who’s posted above) when she had a worry our support was changing after trouble at Everton away.

Our support has always been the same. Going right back to when my Grandad used to go in the 1950s and he said it was rife for dickheads back then too.

When City are playing a football game, home or away, at the game or at some point within a few hours before or after the game, somewhere where City fans are, someone or a group of people will be acting like out of order dickheads causing trouble, upsetting people, hurting people, damaging something... 9 times out of 10 you won’t be near them so won’t get caught up in it, 1 time in 10 you might well get caught up in it.

Just because the large majority of the time you don’t get caught up in it and you don’t see an ounce of trouble or dickheadishness going on, doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen somewhere that you don’t happen to be. It does. Every single game!

This is not a new breed of fan. This is just an experience you’ve had that some Blue somewhere has every week with our own support and the same for every other set of fans up and down the country.

It could be a lot worse. We had real hooligan problems from the 1960s-80s, and on the continent they’re going through that now. There are always dickheads in English football support but it’s not like they’re proper fucking hooligans!
You get the same on the train to the races. People drink beer and (or) snort a key or two of cocaine. The odds are in a large group a small minority will behave like twats. Has always been the case and will always be the case.

Been going regularly to away games for 13 years, and at 31 I wouldn't say I'm in the "young" category - I don't think that there's a new breed of fan whatsoever, I didn't see any aggression on Wednesday night.

The only time where I've felt over the years "fuck me our fans are dicks" was the two times we've played Barcelona in the last 16 - no coincidence that you've got over 2 months to plan the away trip and it's a piece of piss to get to.

And it's a knock out game - big games and City fans scrapping with each other goes hand in hand. In fact if I don't hear or see and blue on blue this coming Sunday then I will truly know that we're taking out success for granted!

And by the way, all fans are the same throughout the country - I'm sure you'll have Accrington Stanley fans thinking the under 25 year olds are a bunch of troublesome cokeheads too. We're no different to any other set of supporters apart from dressing better than United fans.

May be it is time for me to give up....

The majority of trouble I’ve seen of the few aways I’ve been too or Wembley was done by middle aged blokes. Same when other teams cause trouble. I’d says aswell what happens now is nothing compared to 20/30 years ago - regular hooliganism

I was at both WBA in Nov 87, and Gelsenkirchen on Wednesday night.

I can still remember walking back to the car at West Brom whilst observing the Guvnors in full flow, just 50 yards in front of us.
The big difference is that I never felt threatened by the hooligans who supported my team.
I don't feel like that anymore, especially if I say something like "Gundogan's been playing better than Silva recently" to the wrong person, (who instead of arguing constructively, will probably call me a wanker).
I know what you mean mate, but I still think you were more likely to get smacked in those days but off our own fans, yeah I'm not so sure.

The real elephant in the room is that there are now plenty who don't really go for the football. They go because it is more important to get pissed or take whatever shit.

It's probably escapism from their usual day-to-day and masks temporarily what little they have going on in their own lives.

They can obviously do that in the comfort of their own home but would they be allowed to get away with it there.

What you’ve described has always happened.

Yeah but the tolerance shown by some on here is ludicrous. Perhaps less tolerance and responsibility for actions would improve match day experience both home and away, without stopping off at A&E or god forbid ICU in the way back.
