I think it would take something catastrophic to prise him away from us now. There was a point after our first title win (Or may have been after the FA cup?) when Madrid were embarking on their latest shiny toy transfer strategy. That was probably the last proper chance anyone had to sign him (Unless Mancini had stayed, maybe). This contract will see him at the club longer than any other of his career - I'd say he's firmly part of the furniture and any advances will be met with a swift 'Fuck off'.

Doesn't prevent him being sold but helps keep the price up. Hopefully it shows his commitment to the club. He does seem to be settled here, for now; he's going to go home when he stops playing but we need him here until age begins to seriously impact on him.

This is a huge signing. It demonstrates the ambitions of the club and puts a significant marker down. The quality of Merlin's performances over the past few years will not have gone unnoticed by the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona and yet he a chosen to commit his future to our great club. David has obviously recognised something at Manchester City that the British pundits and other broadcasting media outlets simply cannot or will not see for themselves. They mock the 'project' and ridicule the 'holistic approach' but that's because they fear what they do not understand. Manchester City isn't just about creating a successful football club it's about developing a winning philosophy that other clubs will attempt to mimic for decades to come. Merlin can see it and he's committed to it. Happy Days!

At City, he has the chance to be an integral part of the beginning of something great whereas at say Madrid or Barca there are already many legends and he will be one in a sea of them. Not saying this is why he signed or whether players in general even consider this, but it is appealing that you were among the pioneers.
