For a Layman like myself this is a puzzler. During our first season playing among the elite of Europe, with all the exposure it brings, Umbro have chosen to abandon our traditional colours in favour of adopting Coventry City's. I have no doubt an Umbro marketing guru will beguile us with the kit's hidden significance and abstract relevance to the [Manchester] City cause, but this does seem a little bizarre, although of course I'm simply just a sorry Layman.
When you think of a club, what's the first thing you associate with them?
The city they represent, and in particular, their colours.
When you say Milan, you evoke thoughts of bold red and black stripes.
Real Madrid, all consuming white.
And so on.
In our breakthrough season we'll be playing in a shirt plastered with navy blue dots across its face and decorated with a checkered collar, while the shorts will be entirely blue and they'll be joined by blue and white stripped socks.
Nice one Umbro.
