New v Old supporters

You know you are a big club when American pornstars become fans.

I'll admit that I recently started getting into the domestic leagues. It made no sense to only truly follow the sport every 2 years for the Euros and the World Cup. I decided to delve into domestic leagues. As an American, it definitely is tough to follow the leagues across the pond, but I definitely do my best.

Latched onto City for quite a few reasons, but mostly for the hunger to win. My favorite teams here for baseball, basketball, American football, and hockey all have questionable desires to win at any costs, and honestly, I found it fresh. I also didn't want to latch on to an "established powerhouse" either, because that would obviously be horrendous. Fell in love with the shirts, the songs....everything. Manchester City just fits my personality, I think. I am happy with the choice, and am forever loyal.

Of course, learning the nuances of the leagues is tough for someone who's generally unfamiliar, but I try as much as possible and this site is a major help so cheers to all you guys!

EDIT: Who's that pornstar? Haha. Looks familar.

I like sport... just about all sport (some more than others)... In most of those sports i have a team i follow, and some of those teams due to the sport arent even from England, eg New England Patriots... i am a Pats 'fan' i dont invest anything in this other than putting Sky on the right channel when they are on... but if i were to meet someone and talk American Football, i would say I was a Pats fan at some point... I wouldnt like it if someone from Boston told me to do one and support another team or even sport... its my choice and right if you will to follow New England, i have to choose 1 as it adds to the experience of watching and following a sport for me.

I support Manchester City, in time, money, they are my passion in life and have out seen many girlfriends... if i were only to follow one sport and team, then they would be it, for 20 years i have been going and supporting... I want the club to get bigger and better all the time... so if we get people from other countries following us, even if they cant support in person, then fine, who is anyone to say they shouldnt? Who are we to deny the world's greatest club to others? There is no right or wrong way to follow/support a team, just your way... if you are happy with what you have done and can back it up in any banter (and i think this is what the old school are fretting about) why worry about JCLs? Only if you are insecure in own support, should you fret surely?

Hopefully in a season or 2 we wont have to rely on the fact Manchester is blue in banter, as we can celebrate being a better team (with more class than they ever did may i add) than the Rags and not just a better club or fans with better postcodes...

I'm Scottish and although there is a small tie to Manchester (great grandmother) I have no connection with the place at all. However my dad was a Man City fan and didn't like Man Utd and I latched on to this when I was a kid and have never stopped. I have been a fan for 15 years and the last 5 years or so have managed to get to a few games, but I could never afford to travel down for every home game. Any game I'm at I always get on well with people in the stadium (usually sit in 104 and was there getting soaked at WB game last weekend!), no one has even mentioned my accent when we are speaking. One thing I have noticed since we got taken over by the Abu Dabs though is that I see a lot more City shirts in Scotland. I used to always be the weirdo who wasn't wearing a Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea or Rag shirt at 5 a side's but they are definitely more common now. I do support my local team (Dundee Utd, though I live in Edinburgh now) but have always enjoyed English football because it is a hell of a lot better to watch. Some people may think I don't deserve to follow City but it won't affect how much support I give them!

Pretty much the same here, I had family who moved down to the Manchester area and were City fans, thats when I started supporting them 30 odd years ago and the fact that Scots like Asa Hartford & willie Donnachie were in the team was a bonus, been through the highs & many many lows and try to get to at least 2-3 games a season.

Any team who become succesful will gain fans, the "real" ones will be those who stick with the club, I really did like the old days of City when we were battling against the big boys, but would I want to go back to that........no chance. I'll welcome any new fans as long as they're here for the long haul and are here for the love of the club and what it represents not just for the glory days.

I was born in London, and I don't go to away games because I don't feel comfortable about going on my own to them, does that make me less of a blue? does it fuck.

No blue should ever need to justify how big a fan they are, or why they support them. It pisses me off when this section of support blabber on because they had the fortune of being born before the rest of us or because they were born in Manchester so they automatically have the moral high ground because of complete and utter chance.

I don't care if there's a texan sitting with a plate of BBQ Ribs and fries and going "yeah City! wooo! soccer's awesome!" while watching us on TV, or the groups of Spaniards, Germans and Belgians who turn up at games to watch their favourite players and enjoy themselves, they paid their way like anybody else, or whether there's a brazilian tribe in the amazon with a black and white TV who happen to be diehard Jo fans, if they want to support us then who cares. The only reason we use the "oh but we're all from manchester" is a sense of injustice that United use that moniker and because, quite frankly, we're ever so slightly jealous of the success they've had, and don't deny it, because ever single one of us would love to win trophies.

Anyway these loyal fans can look at themselves in the mirror, because those red and black scarves for the Neil Young Appeal raised about £10,500, when the requested minimum donation was £5, so that's £4,500 that tightarse "loyal and diehard" city fans refused to give to the appeal for the scarf. I know many did put that in and more, which is wonderful, but I would not be at all surprised if there are a few on here bigging up how loyal they are yet they couldn't even stick a £5er in a pot for a legend, what nerve.

It's pathetic 2bh.

I think its a mancunian thing anyway.

Ive nothing against out of town fans or people at all to be honest but being from manchester i do sometimes feel superior to people out in the sticks, dunno if its just me or others are like that but cant really help it.

All these years we've looked at the Rags with their "Cockney Reds" fans and fans from the home counties who just link themselves to the successful club because it gives them reflected glory in their probably sad, unsuccessful lives. The word i've used for years is "pathetic" about them. For many of us Blues it's gonna be hard to adjust to them same sort of people "supporting" (from their armchairs and watching 3D games in pubs) City.

The only nail in the coffin of this argument is that we havent had any success, so in fact any new supporter who has come to this club since the takeover cant be a gloryhunter.
Maybe these new fans hated the idea of latching on to the existing elite clubs for fear of being classed a "Gloryhunter"..Now City are in the fold they choose us and this is taken somewhat badly by those who feel their place as a true city fan threatened in some way..
For years and years City have had fans who have watched from the telly and in pubs around the country/europe and the world..what would you prefer?? the old City (need i say more) up and down like the preverbial yoyo, conveyor belt of managers ??
or the new City with the Shiehks billions, players and dreams of success and the new following/support that comes with it...
no brainer really..
When you are stood on the terrace at Eastlands or at an away match dont worry about the fans watching in pubs, online or in 3d...enjoy the game.

I bet most of the fans you refer to would love to be in your shoes and at the game. ;)
