Newcastle fans

I remember reading an article by Oliver Holt a few years ago about Newcastle and City. Wish I could find it now. It mentioned the differences in the support and loyalty of the fans. He tore the Geordies a new one.
Had a rosette once that said........DOYLE EATS MAGPIES.
That was the winning slogan on Piccadilly 261 for the LC final in '76.

Subjective, depends who they were up against doesn't it? I'm not aware of which big clubs woulhere were some really good sides around, but were not the champions of their country the previous year.dn't have qualified the "open trade" cities part to be fair, but again "the runners up cup" should tell you something about the level of prestige it was held in. Regardless despite the UEFA Cup being seen as the successor to it, that competition isn't even officially recognised by UEFA, so they don't even count it against a club's European record themselves(so they clearly don't see the UEFA Cup as a direct successor). For me it's a bit of a none starter using it to claim European success(even if you could consider 1 cup many moons ago a success which you can't) considering everything going against the claims it was "highly prestigious".

Perhaps I might see it differently had we won one of those, then again much like the European Cup Winners Cup it's nice to be able to say we won a European Cup but it would be embarrassing to make any more of it than that.

Do you not remember matches in the UEFA cup against such teams as Valencia, Juventus, Standard Liege, AC Milan, and Borussia Monchengladbach in the 70s? All very good teams at the time. In fact, the Juve team had the majority of their national squad iirc. Kicked us off the pitch, Gentile swapping shirts during the match, etc. There were some really good sides around, but were not the champions of their country the previous year. This was at the time that the dippers were successful. They didn't meet many really good teams to win "big ears" in that period.

I wasn't around in the 70s mate so wouldn't claim I remembered it, I do like to research some of these football claims though such as Newcastle being big(they are historically fairly big at least domestically anyway but not bigger than City) it's interesting what you can find out and how a lot of clubs sugar coat things(Liverpool and United for example).

I did say it depends who they were up against, also because of the lower prestige not all the big teams would prioritise that competition, just as some don't the Europa League or the League Cup these days.

Juve, Napoli and Liverpool for example were in it that year, just looking back at it now I noticed Hamburg even pulled out of the competition themselves at the quarter finals stage, which doesn't look great unless there was a good reason for it.

Newcastle's run was:

1st Round

Feyenoord Rotterdam
2nd Round
Sporting Clube de Portugal
3rd Round
Real Zaragoza (Spain)
Quarter-finals
Vitória de Setúbal (Portugal)
Semi-finals
Rangers FC
Final
Újpest FC (Hungary)

I think that proves my point, some good teams in there fair enough but not supporting the "tougher to win" shout not that year anyway. I'd say it was about the same as the European Cup Winners Cup but perhaps without the prestige perception behind it.

Probably depends on which period of time you are looking at. There are periods in City's history when the attendances have been very low. Prior to Mercer and Allison I believe. Wasn't around then, but sure I've seen some very low attendance figures for those days

The Geordies and Mackems crowds are amazing. To my mind we stayed strong because Utd were so vile that it was cool to be City. And football in the 90s, and the Manc scene (Northside etc) helped a lot. It was an era when it was very cool to be a City fan even if the football was terrible.

Have a guess what Rangers fans did to Newcastle after that defeat.

Was that the cup tie where Salano (I think) shoved Dunne(I think) over and scored.
It kicked off all over the City?
In the stands was arguably the loudest I've ever heard our fans.
I remember a big pub getting smashed up by fans trying to get in/out to fight each other.
Probably circa 2000?

Yeah I remember that game. It was 2002. We played really well with ten men, and were unlucky to lose. Great atmosphere though, and it kicked off everywhere afterwards.

yesterday it was a bit like the old days in ss 3rd tier, there fans was mouthy all game and then near the end, a couple of there fans tried to jump into the city fans, one was throwing punches but he got a few thrown back at him and he fell back into his own fans but got collared and thrown out. On facebook a few city fans said it kicked off outside the ground as well. but I walk up aston rd so didn't see any bother but talked to a couple of fans going that way and they said its getting worse with there fans now, thought they was better then this, and only rags and scousers acted like this, I even was called a manc bastard before game but it was because I called a Newcastle fan a sunderland fan but that was banter

There were a few of them getting a bit lairy on Ashton New Road after the game, but the police horses stepped in before it kicked off. Some gobby little twats amongst them though, teenagers acting like ten men after being on the gear all day.

I knew I remember Solano throwing someone over before they scored.

As I said earlier, great atmosphere that night. Kicking off everywhere, mate of mine brought his new bit off posh Newcastle Uni totti to meet us pre game, her eyes were a picture as the rioting started. I'd just returned from NYC and had the most awful Tony Soprano velour tracksuit, I thought I looked the dogs...
Fond memories from when we were in between very shit & not very good...

I used to like Newcastle, especially in the late 80s. They were similar to us at failure and i found Geordies endearing in general, plenty still are but they seem to be a dying breed nowadays. However, some of them are simply amnesic or too young to know their and our history, especially when giving us the almost obligatory WWYWYWS chant that most no nowt dullards give us at ours.

I was at Newcastle a couple of games in the 80s between 86-89, one game was v Oldham. I can't recall the other game or what season. I've tried researching online (as alcohol on the day blotted my memory), but it was well before their stadium extension.

Their Gallowgate end and the opposite end were uncovered terracing at the time. I was on my own in a pub near the train station having a pint and got talking to three geordies before the game. They were welcoming and friendly lads and suggested I go in their end with them as it was pay on the gate. I did and was shocked that their attendance was about 18500 and this was for a league game, the stadium was pitifully sparse of those so called loyal geordies back then.

I haven't forgot when l saw a large gang of 'toony tubbies' coming down Claremont rd giving it large with their shit "E-I-E-I-E-I-O, up the Premier League we go" song.

Since then to nowadays they've been largely shit, and many feel aggrieved that we found the last golden ticket in our Mansour wonka bar, whilst they had to chomp on a big fat Ashley Wanka bar. And that has been so bitter tasting and everlasting. Tough shit I say. We've had our own shit to deal with not too long ago.

I have no problems with Sunderland fans in general. We relegated them at Maine rd when they brought about 15000, no trouble as I recall, they just got pissed and accepted their fate, many drinking with us blues quite happily.

Can't understand the sunderland love in by a lot on here, a few short years ago they were spitting at us as we came out of the ground after Adam Johnson had scored the only goal of the game for them. It was over the Xmas period as well iirc.
In my mind they are all the same in the north east, as football fans that is.

Before anyone moans at me, I mean in general and obviously not all of them.

Got to say something about my geordie experience. I know all clubs have some twats though.

For the game in 2012, when we won 2.0 my geordie mate sorted out tickets, but in Newcastle end. His mates met me before the game, i had never met any of them before. They took me to a working men's club before the game and made it known I was a city fan. They were superb I did not buy a drink.

After the game we met up and it was the same. They all hated the rags with a passion and were hoping we would win the league. Great day in all. They never even minded when i told them i was there for the tueart goal in '76.

I have a similar story,I was 11 in 76 when we beat newcastle and my dad couldn't get us tickets ,his mate went with a few others and stumbled into a pub in london,it was full of geordies and they crapped their pants and tried to turn round and get out pronto ,the geordies were having none of it and invited them in,bought them beer til they left and refused to have beer bought back.Newcastle have always been a team Iv looked out for along with west ham.

Turned into bitter tossers the last few years.

I was in the tier below our away fans for the 2012 Yaya game with my 22 year old lad, we were pinged but quite safe, was funny in the bogs at full-time, full of blues but we were all edgy to speak.

Got outside & party time.

They were all mouthing off and fronting up behind the tall green fence so I walked over to where there were a few of the smaller metal fences next to it and moved one so there was a gap and said there you are then come through and they moved it back fronting up and posturing behind it again. All with their skinny jeans, fake tans, bleached white teeth, hair dos and resistance machine physiques. They’re the biggest set of boyband faux hard men in the country! It was like a thousand Roberto Firminos were kicking off with us.

Bizarre twats

Post of the year.

I was a little more in shape to be honest, swap the blue for grey and we're not a million miles away.
I might see if I can dig it out and reinvigorate it. I'm sure my wife would be delighted!!
