Same here never resented them for it but remember feeling slightly envious and was genuinely gutted for them in 1996.I frequently have to remind a Geordie pal of mine of this era when he pipes up about money. They went from a yo-yo club with sub 20k crowds to challenging for the title within 3 years and breaking the transfer record for Shearer apparently built on the reawakening of the Geordie nation post Thatcher!Did you really resent those clubs getting investment? I am surprised. I didn't resent it at all, I enjoyed watching Blackburn pip united to the title on the last day and they were my "second club" all that season. Same with Newcastle under Keegan, I was desperate for them to win the title that year they capitulated and always liked the fact that the money Chelsea had enabled them to put the brakes on united's dominance. Not once did I begrudge any of those clubs, just hoped they would use their spending power to stop united.
Was that the cup tie where Salano (I think) shoved Dunne(I think) over and scored.
It kicked off all over the City?
In the stands was arguably the loudest I've ever heard our fans.
I remember a big pub getting smashed up by fans trying to get in/out to fight each other.
Probably circa 2000?
Sunderland got 32,000 for the visit of Oxford United in the third tier at the weekend. Bloody fantastic support. Great fans.Another reason for us to like Sunderland.
There was an Fa Cup game I went around the Year 2000 i think Solano score for them in a 1-0 win. We brought around 9k and I still couldn't get a ticket and had to watch the game in a boozer outside the ground called the Black Bull (If memory serves me right) there was quite a few blues in there and it inevitably kicked off.Definitely a cup tie. Think Dunney was sent off very early on. Almost sure it was 1-0.
Went on coach very early doors as it was either sunday or bank holiday and found a boozer in a little village just before turning off A1. Spent the afternoon there as booze was banned in Newcastle i think. We came out of pub and police had surrounded it. They escorted us all the way to stadium. Big geordie boozer on the hill with loads outside and a line of coppers down the middle of the road seperating us. Not sure if it was before or after march but the line got stormed and off it went.
Yeah me too, even when they signed Shauny Wright and I was pretty heart broken, I still wished him well and applauded him when he came back to play against us. There wasn’t a single boo in the stadium, no reaction like Liverpool fans with Sterling and Sterling didn’t even come through their academyVisited a mate in Newcastle in 2003 and a few of the locals stated they hated all mancs even then
They seem to resent us having any success now even though we went through shit whilst our neighbours won trophies galore and still supported our team
Sunderland seem to be the complete opposite and it’s like Geordies are similar to Rags with a divine right to winning and Makems similar to us
Similar in London with West Ham compared to hatred of Spuds and Arse
When Chelsea won the lottery I loved the fact it was another team to put the Rags in their place
This is a tricky one for city fans, I think. We didn’t resent it because it meant the rags might not win every year! It would be interesting what other teams fans thought about it. I’d imagine the Dippers and Arse hated the Chelsea money as it pushed them out of the top 3 (as it was in those days, it’s only beyond the top 6 as the rags have got worse). Wonder what the bar-codes, Spuds and villa thought about the Chelsea cash? Same as the view us, I’d imagine.Did you really resent those clubs getting investment? I am surprised. My feelings exactly, I had wanted us to get some decent investment ever since Joe Mercer left but that was never going to happen with Swales in charge. I was never going to resent any other club giving the rags a hard time.Did you really resent those clubs getting investment? I am surprised.
