Newcastle United (A) | Post Match thread

We are not carrying 25 top players, we have 18 outfield players who can realistically expect to feature in the PL. Of those, Gomez - we have no clue how he is going to adapt to the PL, Alvarez - we can only hope the South American player of the year wont have difficulties to fit in and Palmer - he had few games only and we are from knowing realistically his impact for the whole season. With competing on the four fronts and so many games, with impact of wear and tear throughout the season and five subs option, we have the thinnest of thin squads in the league.
Allegedly Palmer was in the Firbank in Wythenshawe until 1am Friday doing balloons, seen by a lot of people and I do say Allegedly

Did well to get back into the match after a poor middle 50 mins.

Referee bottled the red card due to VAR, there is a difference between a tactical foul and a knee high foul that could have ended De Bruyne's season.

Haaland, De Bruyne & Bernardo salvaged the point.

Could be a good point come the end of the season.

Andy Hinchcliffe can fuck off.
So an airborne knee-high challenge is only a yellow as the Ref and or VAR have the supernatural ability to know whether there is intent. The fact is it was a malicious foul. Red all day long.

As for the game today, I’m not very happy. Sure Newcastle did well but look at the squad we have. We should do better.

I won’t change my stance regarding Rodri. He struggles against teams with high pressing and fast players. He’s capable of a lot but defending is not one of them. The way Newcastle time after time just sliced through our midfield within seconds and running past Rodri with ease was a clear indication of where things were heading. I think Rodri is better suited against teams sitting deep. I can’t stand watching him run next to opposing players and not getting physical. I expect a holding/defensive mid to atleast Try and put in a fkng tackle, standing or sliding I don’t care. Just do something.

I honestly think Kalvin would do great for us.

Agree, watched Kev all these years and knows what he’s capable of but todays assist to Bernardo surprised even me. He really is a remarkable footballer. He has to win balon d’Or at some point.
If we win the Ch L Kev'll win the bd.

Never a red, he stuck a leg out and tripped him to stop kdb breaking through midfield. Definite yellow but not a red, var actually did a good job correcting the referees mistake.
Two feet off the ground, knee high connecting with Kevin. Red all day. Let's see if the Prem say something to prevent the floodgates opening to two-footed airborne lunges.

I think there was clearly and obviously not excessive force used and it was the right decision all round.
Watched it back a few times now, the two players were running at similar pace, and the high foot that came across kev had about as much power as a fart in the wind.
Its a shit foul at best. He tripped him up at knee level.
It's borderline yellow, never mind red.
kev gets up and gets on with it.
I thought it was a great decision

Sky commentator going on about Trippier being a City reject ffs. He left about 15 years without making a first team appearance and I don't think I've heard anyone make the connection between him and City before.
Yep, laughable comment that by Sky.

Thought similar, had that been one of our players I’d be saying that’s VAR doing it’s job right.

I realise that when slowed down or looked as in a still some tackles look far worse than they are - however whenever you go off ground and make contact with the side of a players knee you will be lucky to escape a red. For point of reference ask yourself if that had been one of our lads making that tackle would it have been overturned? I very much doubt it.

Lost in all the debate is three times in the game our players were taken out by "a tactical fouls" - I do like the refs not buying the falling over on contact - in fact when Walker did it and got a foul I was shouting at the ref myself - but when someone is breaking with pace and is taken out to stop a move they need to protect the players. It's hard for us because we know Kev has had knee issues since the Harry Kane and Deli Ali tackles so perhaps we are over protective - I just thought the fact that we had the commentators begging for it to be overturned is not a great look for our game.

Newcastle played aggressively today and looking at how the game went I think we should be happy that we came back, in fact we should have won it - still a few look rusty but it's a great sign we didn't lose.

Haaland looks incredible and once the guys get to know how to play him in more he will be unstoppable. My only issue is when we were far too casual in possession, even Eddie gave it away more times than I've ever seen him do. It only invites a team on. But as I said can't be too disheartened by that comeback - could be worse we could be Raheem tonight - now they were utter shite.

Enough power to take him down or you saying he dived?
He could have fallen and been badly injured but he did get up, on another day!
Running at the same pace really Kev was leaving him in his wake that’s why he took him out
No attempt to win ball openly admitted he took him out
Borderline yellow! Which century you watching football in?

Stuck a leg out and tripped him !!!! It was a 2 footed tackle above the the knee and intentional , which he admitted him self after the game . Plus the fact it was a great scoring opportunity .

Fantastic game that we should have won, but could easily have lost.

Well played Newcastle. Far better and braver to press high up the pitch against City, because we're not so good when the opposition have the ball.
Also, those long floating passes from Ederson to Walker might look good, but invariably lead to City losing the ball in silly positions.

I actually said after it was downgraded to a yellow that he’s essentially told every player on the pitch they can now do a knee high challenge, whilst being out of control with 2 feet off the ground

Thank fuck no player I n either team took him up in the challenge

I’m still gobsmacked as it seemed to be the exact definition of a red card in the laws of the game

Absolutely belting game so I’m kinda glad in a way it ended 11vs11

I think this iteration of the side might be the weakest since Pep built the 2017/18 side. The balance doesn’t feel good and we have no depth at all. The importance of the players that have left has been seriously undervalued by the fans IMO.

I still expect we’ll win the league because Liverpool don’t look up to it, but currently this side doesn’t get close to 17/18, 18/19 or 20/21 for me.
I always respect your opinion, but I’m sure you said a couple of weeks ago this iteration would challenge 100 points for the season?

I'm assuming your on the wum so I'll be kind. For now.
Yes, there was enough power to take him down, that's what made it a foul. Are you seriously suggesting I think kev
dives? Arguing against yourself there.

He could have fallen and been badly injured.
He did fall, because he was tripped. He wasn't badly injured.
He could of been, but he wasn't. He got up and got on with it.

Show me the clip that shows kev 'leaving him in his wake' because not only is that not true, its also somewhat ironically, a phrase often used from the last century.

I've seen kev kicked all over the pitch for years, same with dave not so long ago, often with a blind eye turned. Often made me feel we were being fucked over.
Not today though, that was an innocuous tackle.
With respect, its a contact sport.

I did think we missed Grealish a lot today, that was the kind of game that suits him and he really helps us in.
