For me the big problem that Newcastle face is that they have a number of phases to go through.
You don't go from relegation candidates to top 4 contenders in a season or 2, they will need to sign a calibre of player to get them from where they are to a top 8 side first of all. The problem being these players are then unlikely to be of the quality to get them into the top 4 and they will need further heavy investment.
But squad sizes are limited and most players who join them will be wanting a 5 year contract, if things go to plan they are going to be surplus to requirements in 2-3 years and they then need to find buyers for them.
