More than 40 leading economists, including a former adviser to the Bank of England, have made public their support for Jeremy Corbyn’s policies, dismissing claims that they are extreme, in a major boost to the leftwinger’s campaign to be leader.

The intervention comes as the Corbyn campaign reveals that a Labour government led by the MP for Islington North would reserve the right to renationalise Royal Bank of Scotland and other public assets, “with either no compensation or with any undervaluation deducted from any compensation for renationalisation” if they are sold at a knockdown price over the next five years.

The leftwinger’s economic policies – dubbed Corbynomics – have come under sustained attack in recent days, including by members of his own party, with Andy Burnham warning his party in an interview with this paper not to forget the lessons of the general election about the importance of economic credibility.

But with just under three weeks until Ed Miliband’s replacement is announced, Corbyn’s credibility receives a welcome endorsement as 41 economists make public a letter defending his positions.

In the letter to which Danny Blanchflower, a former member of the Bank of England’s monetary policy committee is a signatory, the economists write: “The accusation is widely made that Jeremy Corbyn and his supporters have moved to the extreme left on economic policy. But this is not supported by the candidate’s statements or policies. His opposition to austerity is actually mainstream economics, even backed by the conservative IMF. He aims to boost growth and prosperity.”

Mr. Corbyn is thought to have longstanding links to the British Labour Party, whose former members include comedy despot, Oswald Mosley.

After a brief stint in Labour, Mosley quit to form the British Union of Fascists. In 1936, he married one of the Mitford sisters at an exclusive ceremony attended by Hitler and Goebbels.

Here’s a chilling fact: Had Corbyn been alive in 1936, and been in the Labour Party, and had he met Oswald Mosley, and had the two been on good terms and kept in touch when Mosley left, and had Mosley then invited Corbyn to his wedding for old times’ sake, and had Corbyn been available and wanted to go…

… Corbyn could have been sat beside Hitler at Mosley’s wedding.

Would you vote for a man who might have shared best-man duties with the Führer, had history been completely different?

We didn’t think so.

That's quite a laboured joke

corbyn-dastardly-small.jpg

Labour Leadership hopeful Jeremy Corbyn has today denied links to well-known scoundrel and bad egg Dick Dastardly, after photographs emerged of the two sharing a car.

Dastardly, described as a double-dealing do-badder, is on record as being willing to nab, jab, stab and grab to achieve his objectives, and is widely regarded as being a pariah in political circles for his extremist views.

In 2007 he was named as a war crimes suspect for activities during his time with the notorious Vulture Squadron.

Pictures published appear to show the two men in the same car shortly after Dastardly was accused of using a huge box labelled “TNT” to knock the Ant Hill Mob out of the Indianapolis 500.

“Jeremy may have shared a car with Dastardly, but as an MP he shares cars with a lot of people and doesn’t always know who they are”, we were told.

“How was he to know that a cackling, moustache-twirling man might not be one hundred percent nice? These accusations are completely unreasonable.”

“This in no way should be taken as condoning Dastardly’s position on using two giant slabs of concrete to kill Yankee Doodle Pigeon.”

“Anyway, Jeremy would be much happier in the Arkansas Chuggabug with Blubber Bear – or Tom Watson as he’s better known these days.”

Critics have rejected the denial, suggesting that Corbyn’s failure to question whether the driver of a bright purple heavily-armed rocket car was an appropriate contact for someone seeking high office, calls his judgement into question.

Dastardly was described as a vicious demagogue who uses overly florid language is happy to use people to achieve his aims, and it’s only one step from him to associating with Russell Brand.

I know, it is a testimony to how far right the centre ground of British politics has moved these last thirty years, that a moderate democratic socialist like Corbyn, suggesting the kind of economic model of mixed public and private ownership, quite common in Continental Europe, is considered hard line Trotskyist here.

On a personal note I'm hugely ambivalent about a Corbyn victory. A

To my mind there's no doubt that the politicians who purport to represent us are a hugely unimpressive bunch; on all sides. Anyone who has harboured political ambitions from a young age should be viewed with the utmost suspicion imo. Today, Parliament comprises mainly of dull, middle-class wankers who are there to attain power for its own ends, not for what it can do for wider society. When I think back to the 'big beasts' of all political colours from a generation ago, the current lot really are a sorry, pitiful bunch. That is because, in my view, too great a premium is placed on political provenance, rather than achievements in the wider world. I believe it's important that those who seek to rule us, are worthy of that responsibility. The current political class manifestly aren't. Corbyn could be the wild-card, game changer that the political system so desperately needs. A 'ghost in the machine' that moves the pieces on the board sufficiently to bring about much needed political change. I would hugely welcome that.

I also believe, however, that a Corbyn victory would be electorally disastrous for the left - and anyone, like me, who doesn't share an illiberal, right wing perspective on how this country should be run. Constituencies in England and Wales fall into two broad camps: those that never change hands and those that do. Poor urban centres and affluent rural areas will always default to the same political setting. The nature of the MPs for constituencies like Manchester Central and Tatton won't be impacted by Corbyn's leadership of the Labour Party. Constituencies like that, however, don't alter the colour of the government in this land. It is the suburban, middle class commuter towns and districts that are the political king-makers in this country. Constituencies like Cheadle, Broxtowe, Worcester and Watford. Places where majorities are low and votes shift with relative ease. These are the battle grounds where general elections are won and lost. Places with relatively affluent, conservative, middle class and cautious electors. People who, in my view, are too wary to place what they would view as a reckless amount of risk on someone they perceive could/would impose himself on the levels of comfort they currently enjoy, whatever latent misgivings they may have about 'the system'.

This is a dynamic which is, quite simply, insuperable. In my view, at least.
At the last election we were moved out of Anne Coffey's Stockport by boundary changes into the Cheadle constituency where Labour is an irrelevance. Corbyn as leader of the Labour Party will simply reinforce the Tory majority over LibDem gained last time. This curious effect, prompted by naked fear, will be repeated in Tory/LibDem contested seats the country over.
